Precision CNC Setup Specialist, First‑Article & Process Optimization
Level: Mid‑to‑Senior | Reports to: Production Manager
Your mission
Transform technical drawings into repeatable, high‑quality production by owning complex setups and validating first‑article quality before release to operations.
Can you...
- Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and setup sheets to configure multi‑axis CNC and rotary transfer machines?
- Install tooling, load programs, set work/tool offsets, and verify everything with a deliberate dry run and single‑block check?
- Run a first article and conduct a complete dimensional review with micrometers, calipers, bore/height gages, optical comparator, and CMM?
- Spot program issues, read G‑code/M‑code, and make efficient, safe edits at the controller (Fanuc preferred)?
- Choose, assemble, and preset the right tools; monitor wear; and make offset changes or replacements to maintain tight tolerances?
- Collaborate with Programming and Engineering to improve cycle times, tool life, and fixture rigidity?
- Coach machine operators on part loading, basic offsets, and in‑process checks once the setup is stabilized?
What it takes
- 3–5 years of CNC setup experience.
- Strong command of G‑code/M‑code and on‑control editing; Fanuc background preferred.
- Advanced metrology skills across both handheld gauges and CMM.
- Fluent with shop math (trig/geometry) for feeds, speeds, coordinates, and trig functions.
- Proficient reading complex prints and understanding tight GD&T callouts.
How you work
- Analytical: you deconstruct tough setups into reliable, safe steps.
- Exacting: you aim for first‑pass yield; rework is a last resort.
- Collaborative: you communicate clearly across engineers and entry‑level operators.
Physical & environment
- Lift up to 50 lbs; stand for long periods.
- Comfortable with shop conditions: noise, oil, and metal shavings.
- Strict PPE and safety compliance at all times.
Proficiencies
- GD&T
- CNC Tooling
- Troubleshooting Skills
