Case Western Reserve University is committed to providing a transparent estimate of the salary for this position at the time of its posting. The starting wage rate is $16.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.

Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has an opportunity for a motivated individual to provide technical support to faculty research investigators as a PREP scholar. The individual will become incorporated into the research program of the individual faculty mentor. This individual is expected to spend working hours in research under the direction of the faculty or other lab supervisor and to participate fully as a PREP Scholar in other coursework and development activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform specific experiments under supervision. (65%)
  • Communicate research objectives, studies and results. (10%)
  • Will have coursework and developmental activities. (20%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with research report preparation. (4%)
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned (including PREP program activities). (1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Contact with PREP director, weekly; PREP coordinator, weekly; PREP web technician, monthly; and PREP administrator, bi-monthly.

University: Contact with faculty mentor (NIH funded investigator at the SOM, TBN) daily/weekly, immediate research project supervisor (may be research assistant, postdoc or graduate student) daily.

External: Contact with conference attendees when scholars travel to ABRCMS or other national conference.

Students: Weekly/daily contact ¿ lab research, journal clubs, lab meetings, and department seminars.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No supervisory responsibility

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 0 to 3 months. Applicant must be accepted in the CWRU PREP program in order to apply for this position.

Education: High school education required; Bachelors degree required before start date.

  • Good interpersonal skills; ability to work and communicate with various individuals within the department, school and university, and with individuals outside the university.
  • Good organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and give attention to detail in order to complete tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to learn and apply new ideas, processes, policies, functions, etc.
  • Ability to problem-solve as needed.
  • Ability to follow-through on assigned projects and provide timely follow-up as needed.
  • Technical competence with software programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), database applications, and with internet navigation. Ability to learn and apply software programs and applications as needed.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  • Ability to demonstrate successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. May be exposed to animals, infectious agent, radioactive materials, chemicals and bloodborne pathogens.

Hybrid Eligibility

This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
