PRESCHOOL PLAY FACILITATOR (Part-time)
Position Type: Classified, Part-Time/Hourly
Hours: 15 hours per week
Department: Exceptional Children / Preschool Program
Reports To: Preschool Coordinator
Based at: Brier Creek Elementary
Minimum Salary - Teacher Assistant $17.79 hourly
POSITION PURPOSE
The Part-Time Play Facilitator supports the district's preschool evaluation process by facilitating structured and child-led play experiences during Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessments (TPBA). The Play Facilitator engages children in developmentally appropriate play activities designed to provide assessment team members with opportunities to observe a child's skills, behaviors, interactions, and responses across developmental domains.
The Play Facilitator works collaboratively with a transdisciplinary team that may include special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and other qualified professionals. This position supports the assessment process but does not independently evaluate children, interpret assessment results, determine eligibility, or make recommendations regarding special education services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Facilitate developmentally appropriate, child-centered play activities during Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessments (TPBA).
- Greet families, help children enter the play environment comfortably, and maintain a positive, supportive presence.
- Establish rapport with young children and create a welcoming, engaging environment that allows children to demonstrate skills across developmental areas.
- Follow established TPBA procedures and direction from qualified members of the evaluation team, including introducing or adjusting activities to support observation of specific skills.
- Model play behaviors when needed to encourage participation or demonstrate how materials can be used.
- Assist children with transitioning between activities in a calm, supportive manner to maintain engagement.
- Work collaboratively with the transdisciplinary assessment team before, during, and following assessment sessions.
- Participate in team debriefing after sessions to share observations and contribute to the overall assessment summary.
- Prepare, organize, clean, and maintain toys, materials, and the assessment environment.
- May assist staff with vision and hearing screenings
- Maintain confidentiality and interact professionally and respectfully with children, families, and staff.
- Participate in required training and follow district procedures related to assessment, safety, and confidentiality.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school.
- Three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of basic needs and developmental stages of children.
- Knowledge of typical behavioral patterns and issues as it deals with children.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to perform simple arithmetic.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, employees, and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, hearing, talking, and repetitive motions. While performing the responsibility of this job the employee is regularly expected to stand and walk and sometimes has to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
