Under the direction of the primary care operations team, the Primary Care Patient Care MA works directly with Mercy Primary Care Providers to provide safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered care in a systematic way. The Primary Care Patient Care MA will partner with patients, providers, and other members of the clinical care team to drive quality outcomes for all patients. Duties and responsibilities will be performed in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Schedule: 40 hours/week, Day Shift

What You’ll Do

As a Medical Assistant in Primary Care, you’ll be a vital part of the patient experience and care team. Your responsibilities include:

Preparing patients for provider visits using the Advanced Standard Rooming Process:

  • Documenting chief complaints
  • Taking vitals, reviewing history and allergies
  • Completing medication reconciliation
  • Addressing care gaps (e.g., screenings, diabetic eye exams)
  • Rechecking elevated blood pressures
  • Documenting preventive visit details in Epic

Performing in-office testing:

  • Blood draws
  • Mental status exams
  • EKGs
  • Oxygen studies
  • Point-of-care testing

Administering vaccines and injections within scope

Scheduling follow-up appointments per office policy

Collaborating with providers and clinical teams to support care plans

Qualifications

Primary Care Assistant – MA

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification: BLS required within 90 days of hire
  • ⭐ Preferred Experience: 6+ months in clinical healthcare, ideally in primary care

Primary Care – Certified MA

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification: Active MA certification/registration (RMA, CCMA, CMA)
  • BLS: Required within 90 days of hire

LPN Option

  • Education: Diploma in Practical Nursing
  • Licensure: Active LPN license
  • Preferred Experience: 6+ months in clinical healthcare, preferably primary care

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 185 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who wanted to help the poor women and children of Dublin. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill her dreams. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to poor women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, the first religious order not bound to the rules of the cloister, whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. By the time Catherine died in 1841, there were convents in Ireland and England, and in 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. In 1871, they traveled to St. Louis and from there throughout the Midwest, beginning what would, today be known as Mercy.
