The Memphis VA Medical Center has an opening for an on-site Primary Care (PC) Physician that offers a dual academic appointment with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). The position reports directly to the Chief of Primary Care and works as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team that collaborates with other members of the team to provide Primary Care to Veterans. The Medical Center consists of one main campus and ten community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). It's a 1a-complexity tertiary care VA healthcare system located in one of the fastest-growing Veteran population regions in the United States. The facility provides comprehensive care to over 47,000 veterans in a 52-county area of Western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, and Northeast Arkansas. It includes 236 inpatient beds with a 26-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Duties include but are not limited to: Expected to demonstrate advanced competencies and skills in assessing the physical and psycho-social status of patients and family members.

Play an active role in the multidisciplinary health-care team by promoting preventive health measures and managing acute and chronic conditions.

Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up and clinical intervention, health history, physical examinations, and patient education to veterans for both scheduled and unscheduled appointments.

Differentiate between normal and abnormal findings to establish a diagnosis and initiate appropriate health plans.

Initiate appropriate referrals and consultations to other clinical services.

Order and evaluate diagnostic tests as appropriate and recommend treatment and/or referral.

Validate the effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment.

Initiate, evaluate, and change orders for medication.

Include patients, family, and caregivers in planning care and establishing realistic, measurable goals for health maintenance/improvement.

Record/document health appraisal information, clinical assessments, treatment decisions, plan of care, ongoing management and therapeutic outcomes, medication orders, diagnostic tests, referral consultations, accomplishing all using the electronic comprehensive patient record system (CPRS) daily.
