Primary Care Provider

Department Overview:

The mission of SHW is to support Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) students, postdoctoral fellows and pathway scholars in personal health and well-being during their academic careers at OHSU. We work to provide exceptional and confidential primary and behavioral health care, integrative medicine, outreach programming, suicide prevention and food resource assistance, located on the primary OHSU campus on Marquam Hill in Portland, Oregon. The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

Function/Duties of Position:

• Provide culturally affirming direct patient care within the OHSU Student Health and Wellness Center; interpreting history, physical and clinical data to develop treatment plans and referrals as needed; reproductive health care; minor dermatologic and sports medicine procedures; initial evaluation and treatment of behavioral health diagnoses; traveler’s health care; eating disorder evaluation and treatment; evaluating and treating acute and chronic illness; ordering labs and imaging studies as appropriate; and managing blood and body fluid exposures.

• Includes availability for on-call and coverage duties in rotation with other SHW practitioners throughout the year.

• Independently manage a complex panel of patients while maintaining timely and accurate documentation in the electronic health record. Clinicians are expected to complete medical record documentation, orders, inbox management, and care coordination tasks within organizational standards.

• Attend and participate in clinic meetings and quality improvement efforts, manage and complete CME requirements, report on courses and updates for other staff, maintain academic standing in department, and follow all OHSU, departmental and clinical policies and procedures

This position is under the direct supervision of the Medical Director of the Student Health and Wellness Center. The clinician will work with primary care and behavioral health providers and SHW staff to enhance access for patients, to ensure efficient use of clinic resources, to make appropriate use of external referrals, and to promote the overall mission, goals and objectives of SHW. The clinician will work closely with other members of the team to provide excellent continuity of care as needed. This hired clinician can expect to work independently and provide consultation to other SHW primary care and behavioral health colleagues. The successful candidate must be comfortable practicing independently within scope, managing clinical uncertainty, triaging urgent concerns, and serving as the primary on-site medical provider when scheduled as the sole clinician. At the request of the Medical Director, the clinician may serve as a liaison to other OHSU programs coordinating with SHW.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience providing comprehensive ambulatory primary care across a broad range of acute, chronic, and preventive healthcare needs.
• Physician Associate, Nurse Practitioner, or MD/DO with completed residency training in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
• Two or more years of relevant clinical experience (post-residency for MD/DO)
• Current licensure as required by specific provider governing board(s) and eligible for Oregon State license.
• Experience providing affirming and equitable care to individuals from a wide range of racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and educational backgrounds.
• Experience utilizing an electronic health record in outpatient clinical practice.
• Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards, the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description.
• Demonstrated proficiency using electronic health record and organizational communication systems to manage documentation, orders, diagnostic results, refill requests, patient messages, care coordination, and other clinical responsibilities in a timely manner consistent with clinic and organizational standards.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize clinical, documentation, and administrative responsibilities while maintaining quality, accuracy, and timeliness.
• Ability to function effectively as an independent clinician in a collaborative practice environment while managing multiple priorities and competing demands.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with patients, staff, and interdisciplinary colleagues.
• Regular and consistent attendance at work- and work-related meetings.
• Able to perform essential tasks with or without accommodations

Preferred Qualifications:

• More than 5 years clinical experience
• Experience working in a Student Health Center at an academic medical center or institution of higher education
• Interest or experience in one or more of the following areas: sports medicine, colposcopy, dermatologic procedures, reproductive health procedures
• Experience managing clinical workflows within Epic or a comparable electronic health record system, including documentation, inbox management, order entry, and patient communication.
• Experience evaluating and managing common mental health conditions within the scope of primary care practice and facilitating appropriate referral, consultation, and co-management for patients requiring specialized behavioral health services.
• Experience collaborating and coordinating care with interprofessional teams using electronic communication and shared care management workflows.
• Interest in participating in outreach presentations, wellness programming, and student engagement activities, particularly those supporting historically marginalized student populations.

Additional Details:

If the position is filled by an MD/DO, the position will be an unclassified faculty position. If the position is filled by a Nurse Practitioner, it will be a Clinical Associate that follows the Advanced Practice Union (APU) contract. The finalist will be required to gain faculty appointment in the Department of Family Medicine at OHSU, no matter their degree.
