    Position Overview

    The Principal of John Trumbull Primary School is an experienced, dynamic, and collaborative educational leader responsible for providing visionary leadership and effective management for students in grades Pre-K through 2. This 11-month position requires Connecticut Intermediate Administrator Certification (092) and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field. The Principal works to create a safe, nurturing, inclusive, and academically rigorous school environment that supports the social, emotional, and academic growth of all students while advancing the goals of Watertown Public Schools.

    The ideal candidate demonstrates expertise in early literacy and numeracy instruction, including evidence-based practices and the science of reading, and has experience supporting teachers in the implementation of effective curricula and interventions. The Principal also brings strong knowledge of early childhood and primary education, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), assessment and data analysis, restorative practices, special education, Multi-Lingual Learners, and diverse student populations. This leader is committed to equity, culturally responsive practice, and closing achievement gaps, especially in foundational skills.

    Required Qualifications

    • Connecticut Intermediate Administrator Certification (092).
    • Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or a related field.
    • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level.
    • At least three years of administrative or leadership experience in a school setting.
    • Demonstrated success in supporting student achievement and closing achievement gaps.
    • Experience with special education, Multi-Lingual Learners, and diverse student populations.
    • Experience implementing restorative practices and positive behavioral interventions.

    Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    • Deep understanding of early childhood and primary education, with a focus on child development and foundational literacy and numeracy.
    • Strong instructional leadership and knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and data analysis.
    • Strong relational leadership, fostering trust, collective efficacy, and a unified team culture.
    • Ability to facilitate PLCs and guide teachers through collaborative inquiry using student data.
    • Experience coaching and supporting teachers through modeling and actionable feedback.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners.
    • Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
    • Proficiency with technology and digital tools for instruction and administration.
    • Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making abilities.
    • Collaborative, team-oriented leadership with a commitment to equity, diversity, and culturally responsive practice.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide instructional leadership that promotes high academic standards and continuous improvement in Pre-K through Grade 2.
    • Builds and sustains a cohesive school community by establishing conditions where staff feel safe to innovate, collaborate, and engage in continuous improvement.
    • Supervise, evaluate, and coach teachers and staff to strengthen the delivery of evidence-based literacy and numeracy instruction.
    • Support and facilitate high-functioning PLCs through collaborative inquiry cycles and the use of student learning data to improve teaching and learning.
    • Develop and implement school improvement plans aligned with district goals and state standards, with a focus on foundational skills.
    • Promote a positive, inclusive, and safe school climate that supports social-emotional learning and developmentally appropriate practices.
    • Analyze assessment data to identify student needs and guide targeted interventions in early literacy and numeracy.
    • Collaborate with families, community partners, and district personnel to support student success, well-being, and family engagement.
    • Ensure compliance with special education laws, promote Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), and support the development and implementation of IEPs, 504 Plans, and inclusive practices.
    • Address student discipline in a fair, consistent, and restorative manner.
    • Oversee daily school operations, including scheduling, budgeting, staffing, and resource allocation.
    • Communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and the broader school community.

    Terms of Employment

    Per the collective bargaining unit agreement between the Watertown BOE and the WAA; Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience

    Work Schedule

    215 days per contract year
