Primary Sped Paraprofessional

Primary Purpose

An ISS Paraprofessional provides instructional assistance to students that are placed in the in-school suspension (ISS) disciplinary setting. A Behavioral Adaptation Support Environment (BASE) Paraprofessional manages student behavior in the BASE classroom while under the direct supervision of a certified teacher. Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing of classroom activities.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
• Certification: Have met formal academic assessment, associates degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning.
• Valid Texas educational aide certificate.

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Ability to work well with children.
• Ability to communicate effectively.

Experience

• Some experience working with children.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Instructs and models replacement behaviors identified on students behavior plan.
2. Provides instruction and role-play opportunities for students in replacement behaviors identified in students behavior plan.
3. Consistently monitors students and uses BASE monitoring sheets to document student behaviors.
4. Maintains effective communication with classroom teachers, staff, administrators, and parents that build relationships and lead to greater behavioral outcomes.
