Principal Building Automation (DDC) Field Technician

Join a team where your expertise directly shapes how commercial and industrial buildings across New England breathe, balance, and perform.

Our mission

At Pheonix Controls—part of the MIH Systems Group—we deliver turnkey HVAC solutions through design, installation, and ongoing service. We partner with mechanical contractors, general contractors, building owners, facility managers, and engineers to craft custom, high-quality systems backed by a reputation for excellence and customer satisfaction.

The challenge you’ll own

Imagine bringing a new facility online: you map devices, program controllers, and validate sequences so air handlers, VAVs, and hydronic equipment operate in harmony. You spot an integration hiccup with a third-party platform, trace it across the BACnet trunk, and correct the configuration. By project closeout, the system is optimized for energy efficiency, trending is clean, and the team you led is sharper than when the week began.

Key outcomes

  • High-quality installation, programming, and commissioning of DDC controls—controllers, sensors, actuators, and networks.
  • Verified sequences of operation and robust troubleshooting that prevent callbacks.
  • Seamless collaboration with engineering and project management on control strategies.
  • Field leadership: guiding technicians on installs, repairs, and upgrades while delivering on schedule.
  • Structured training and mentorship for junior technicians.
  • Preventive maintenance that sustains uptime and maximizes efficiency.
  • Resolution of advanced control issues impacting performance and reliability.
  • Accurate documentation of system configurations, changes, and updates.
  • Continual adoption of new technologies and best practices in HVAC controls.

What you’ll need to succeed

  • At least 5 years of hands-on HVAC controls experience centered on DDC.
  • Strong grounding in HVAC systems, control theory, and field components.
  • Proven ability to program and configure platforms such as Niagara 4/ ax, Johnson, Distech, and Honeywell.
  • Background integrating DDC with BMS and other automation systems.
  • Working knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks communications.
  • Competence reading control schematics, wiring diagrams, and project specs.
  • Expert troubleshooting and analytical capability.
  • Leadership experience supervising and developing technicians.
  • Excellent organization and time management across multiple priorities.
  • Clear communication and collaborative approach with clients and partners.
  • Relevant controls/DDC certifications preferred.
