PRINCIPAL CLERK POLICE DEPARTMENT Summary: Provides secretarial and clerical support. Performs administrative duties for variety of departmental programs. Greets and assists the public in person, by phone, or by email. Prepares daily files for court. Creates and maintains computer databases and spreadsheet files, assists in preparation of statistical and narrative reports and projects. Prepares correspondence, bills, statements, and various documents; indexes records. Processes forms, permits and other documents; verifies accuracy and sorts information. Attends meetings, prepares agendas, takes notes, records proceedings and transcribes minutes for department meetings. Collects revenue, records payments, and prepares deposits. Performs basic bookkeeping and account balancing, and assists with various payroll functions. Processes Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. Maintains confidentiality. Reads, sorts and codes incoming material according to file system. Qualifications: Requires High School diploma and/or GED and 3 years of relevant experience. Education and experience beyond high school diploma/GED may be substituted. Possession of Bachelor Degree will substitute for 1 year of relevant work experience. Requires excellent communication skills, high level of confidentiality, and ability to maintain effective working relationships. Requires intermediate knowledge of database, spreadsheet, word processing, payroll systems, and Internet software, and basic knowledge of purchasing software. Physical Demands & Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms, lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Regularly works in indoor or office environment. Classification, Schedule & Information: Full time position, 37½ hours per week, Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (½ hour unpaid lunch daily), and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (no lunch period). Position tested (computerized testing based on related job functions, and MS Excel test). Benefits include Defined Benefit Pension Plan, generous time off (personal days, perfect attendance days, vacation, accrued sick leave, including 13 full day & 2 half day holidays) & insurance package (medical, dental, vision care, prescriptions, life, and short-term disability).
