Job Summary

The Principal Critical Facility Architect provides technical leadership in design, development, and implementation of backup power systems, comm rooms, data/control centers, and alarm system deliverables. The primary role is electrical design of power systems within company facilities, and as such a State of California Registered Professional Electrical Engineer is required. This includes electrical design at data centers, comm rooms in offices and service centers, and mountaintop comm locations. In addition to primary power design, this position also handles backup power including generators, backup batteries, and 48 VDC power plant. Lastly, the Critical Facility Architect will manage building upgrades/replacements for IT-operated facilities; henceforth the primary power plants, backup power plants, and building infrastructure will be referred to as power systems.

This role provides budgetary estimates for power systems for client and IT projects, and works with other architect teams to ensure power systems meet operational needs. The position works with corporate real estate and land agents on site selection, specifying IT power needs in shared facilities. It sets technical direction and operational feasibility of power system solutions that are part of IT network architecture and services standards, to meet clearly defined technical performance requirements. The role evaluates the need for new power solutions and collaborates with architect teams to create prototypes and standards. The Principal Critical Facility Architect acts as technical lead for the critical facility team, engineering team, and project management teams implementing projects within the critical facility programs and client projects. All employees are responsible for performing their jobs in accordance with the company's vision and values.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and an office within the service territory to be determined approximately 2 days per week based on business needs or company requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directs critical facility team in preparation of battery, power board, generator, facility alarming, and facility upgrades by utilizing subject-matter expertise.
  • Oversees power system architecture and design of technology solutions supporting business requirements on projects.
  • Engages with clients to develop power solutions and ensure delivery is aligned with the requirements in technical/logic design.
  • Provides advanced consulting and guidance of the power system requirements during the detailed design, build, test, and deploy phases of IT projects.
  • Ensures the successful implementation of power systems in complex client environments, larger scale, and cross-functional new/enhanced systems on time, in scope, and within budget.
  • Leads integration of client requirements into and works with critical facility team to create power system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements at the department level.
  • Presents power system project scopes and budgets and makes recommendations to high-level leaders for project/program approval.
  • Identifies the developmental needs of others, and coaches and mentors others to improve their knowledge or skills.
  • Partners with critical facility team to develop and maintain all technical standards, design patterns, reference architectures, and roadmaps for a Reference Architecture Framework containing a broad collection of foundational services.

Required Experience

  • 10 years of experience in IT / Information Technology engineering design, OR Master's degree and 8 years of experience in IT engineering design and/or technical project implementation.
  • Experience with multi-tier enterprise technology environments.
  • Experience in enterprise architecture environments, job-related.

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Experience in Radio systems implementation, job-related.
  • Experience in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Experience in project management, IT / Information Technology.
  • Leadership experience.

Required Skills

  • Electrical design of power systems within large-scale facilities (data centers, comm rooms, mountaintop comm locations).

Preferred Skills

  • PMP Project Management Professional certification.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a job-related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Required: State of California Registered Professional Electrical Engineer license.
  • Desired: Registered Professional Electrical Engineer (reinforced as a preferred qualifier in the Qualifications section).

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Hybrid work model working from a remote office and an office within the service territory approximately 2 days per week based on business needs or company requirements.
  • Service territory covers multiple locations across northern and central California, including Oakland, Auburn, Bakersfield, Chico, Davis, Eureka, Fresno, Manteca, Marysville, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Stockton, and West Sacramento.
