    Title and Details Principal Engineer – P&CLocation: Rochester, NY • Work Type: Office • Salary Range: $128,000 – $160,000 + up to 16% bonusReporting to: Manager, Projects UnitOverview The Principal Engineer – P&C is responsible for electric system protection technology platforms, supervising work in energized substations while maintaining the reliability of protective control systems across New York. The role oversees the project portfolio within the assigned Unit, ensuring each project adheres to regulations, company standards, and maintains consistency. The engineer collaborates daily with cross‑functional project teams, supports project needs directed by the Project and Unit Managers, and provides expertise in control and protection schematics, single‑line diagrams, and national and international standards related to power system protection.Key Responsibilities Project detailed engineering: designs and calculations using standard methodology and principles, covering scoping, budgeting, conceptual engineering, engineering design, construction, and closeout.Maintain and understand drawings (schematics, one‑line diagrams, etc.).Develop and specify equipment, assemble documents and other project requirements, leveraging depth and breadth of subject‑matter expertise.Ensure all engineering designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.Oversee engineering studies to evaluate equipment and protection system performance and effectiveness, and analyze operational issues to support system reliability and operational efficiency.Develop and validate information needed for engineering analyses, applying engineering judgment to solve complex technical problems.Collaborate across departments, work independently with minimal supervision, and lead and guide the technical development of the Protection Engineering group.Skills and Requirements Theoretical engineering knowledge in planning, operations, and engineering design; analytic, modeling and calculation skills; understanding of the business model.Practical engineering experience in planning, operations, and engineering design, construction, and field standardization.Proficiency in performing economic analyses of engineering alternatives, developing business cases, and defending them to stakeholders.Excellent engineering documentation skills: ability to document, interpret, review and approve engineering work to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements.Strong knowledge of regulatory and compliance environments (local, state and federal regulatory standards and requirements). Knowledge of substations protection and control design is a must.Knowledge of company, local, state and national codes and standards, and construction in utility environments or large corporations.Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (required). Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience (required).
