JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Building Principal

Qualifications: As defined in State Department of Education Regulations and Standards for

Certification.

Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

Supervises: Directly or indirectly all school personnel and services.

Primary Function: To provide leadership, supervision, and coordination of the total

educational program within the school.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.

  2. Supervises the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of all school-based

programs and activities.

  1. Participates in the selection and supervision of all school personnel. Assists staff in their

personal and professional development.

  1. Supervises, directly or indirectly, all administrative, professional, paraprofessional, and

non-professional personnel attached to the school.

  1. Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all board policies and

regulations by the school's staff and students.

  1. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the

absence of the principal.

  1. Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with parents, local community groups and

individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for and participation in overall school

objectives and programs; to interpret board policies and administrative directions; and to discuss

and resolve school-related problems.

  1. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork

required or appropriate to the schools administration and to keeps the

district administrator apprised of school events and activities.

  1. Supervises the exclusion from school of any pupil who shows a departure from normal health, who

has been exposed to a communicable disease, whose presence may be detrimental to the health and

cleanliness of other pupils. Assures that excluded pupils, parents, or guardians are apprised of

the reason for exclusion.

  1. Assumes responsibility for health, safety, and welfare, of students, and staff, including the

planning for such emergencies as firestorms and the training of students in the procedures to be

followed during such events.

  1. Conducts staff meetings as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.

  2. Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to

the district's code of conduct policy.

  1. Prepares and administers the school budget, supervises school finances, and maintenance of

school funds.

  1. Serves as a member of such task forces and committees and attends such meetings as the

Superintendent shall direct.

  1. Attends school-sponsored activities, functions, athletic events, and special events held to

recognize student achievement.

  1. Ensures that students record-keeping procedures comply with state and federal law and district

policy. Establishes procedures for the safe storage and integrity of all school records.

  1. Establishes procedures for the security and accountability of all school facilities, property,

and equipment.

  1. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings,

reading professional journals and other publications and discussing problems of mutual interest

with others in the field.

  1. Maintains and carries out adopted policies of the Board of Education

  2. Serves as the prime liaison person between district and school.

  3. Directs the planning for the operation of instruction in all aspects, including all types of

scheduling, registration of students, and creation of the master schedule.

  1. Supervises and directs the disciplinary and control aspects of the school.

  2. Provides and maintains adequate record-keeping practices of students' educational progress to

assure all legal (state and local) requirements are met.

  1. Provides for suitable leadership and opportunities in all aspects of extra-curricular activity.

  2. Prepares administrative reports, including a monthly report to the Superintendent.

  3. Takes responsibility for field trip allocation and permission to take such trips.

  4. Provides for adequate recognition of student accomplishments through graduation exercises,

baccalaureate, award programs, letters of recognition, etc.

  1. Assists the district by interpreting local school concerns and needs, sits on district

committees and attends bi-monthly senior administrative meetings.

  1. Delegates functions and responsibilities to qualified assistants in such a manner that the

total program operates effectively and efficiently.

  1. Creates a positive image of the school and promotes the best learning and teaching climate

possible.

  1. Prepares and submits the school's budgetary requests and controls expenditures of budgeted

funds.

  1. Keeps abreast of and contributes to trends, developments, and research as they pertain to

education and school operation.

  1. Exercises decisive leadership in crisis situations.

  2. Assumes responsibility for the safety and management of the school plant.

  3. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.

  4. Performs additional or alternative duties, where appropriate, which are within the scope of

employment and certification as may be assigned (especially relevant to positions other than the

classroom teacher).

  1. Performs such other duties as are contained in the job descriptions for classroom teachers,

except as they may be modified or superseded by any of the responsibilities above.

  1. Performs such additional duties as may be established by new regulations issued by the State

Board of Education or the Commissioner of Education or those resulting from changes in existing

regulation.

Terms of Employment:

12 Month full-time PVRAA Contract

Annual Evaluation: performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with NJ

State law and the provisions of the board's policy on evaluations.

Salary Range: $190,000 - $210,000
