Our district is accepting applications for the position of Principal of our Sewell School, supervising students in Preschool and Kindergarten. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five (5) years of teaching and/or educational leadership experience within an elementary school, and be able to select, motivate, and evaluate high-quality staff. Demonstrated knowledge and ability in the areas of curriculum and instruction, staff supervision, and early childhood are preferred. Certification as a Principal from the NJ Department of Education is required.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
Serves as the educational leader and Chief Administrator of the school, responsible for implementing and managing the policies of the Board of Education to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe child-centered learning environment that meets and exceeds the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, following the approved curricula and directives of the school. Achieving academic excellence requires that the School Principal work collaboratively to lead and nurture all members of the school staff and to communicate effectively with parents, members of the community, and colleagues in other districts and schools. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for planning, curriculum development, program evaluation, various activities, personnel management, financial management, emergency procedures, resource scheduling, and facilities operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The School Principal shall:
- Hold a New Jersey administrative certificate in accordance with the requirements of N.J.S.A. 18A:27.1 et seq. and N.J.A.C. Title 6 Chapter 11, with a principal endorsement (N.J.A.C 6A:9-12.1 et seq.).
- Hold a Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Have at least two (2) years excellent administrative experience as a Principal or Vice Principal, or Supervisor and excellent experience in teaching and working with adolescents.
- Demonstrate excellent leadership and organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.
- Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The School Principal shall:
- Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
- Attend Board of Education meetings on an as-needed basis.
- Keep the Superintendent of Schools informed of school activities and needs and works collaboratively with central office staff on matters relating to the school and the district. Prepare a monthly report to the Superintendent as requested.
- Serve as a role model for staff by assuming responsibility for his/her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, memberships in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses and by reading professional journals and other publications.
- Develop and maintain a master schedule for the academic and extracurricular programs.
- Work collaboratively with the central office personnel to schedule community use of the school building and grounds.
- Attend special events held to recognize student achievement and other school-sponsored activities and functions (i.e., Board of Education Instructional Updates).
- Supervise the school's educational program.
- Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies by the school's staff and students.
- Assist in the development, revisions, and evaluation of the curriculum.
- Supervise all professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and non-professional personnel attached to the school and shall evaluate all teachers and personnel under his/her jurisdiction in accordance with Board policy.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and administration of the school building.
- Delegate authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
- Budget school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
- Plan and supervise fire and safety drills and an emergency preparedness program.
