Principal Software Engineer

The Privileged Access Control (PAC) team within Identity & Network Access (IDNA) is building the next generation of Microsoft's just-in-time privileged-access platform. Our systems protect high-value production and customer environments by replacing standing privileges with policy-driven, time-bound access that is approved and fully auditable.

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership across the broader privileged-access ecosystem and expand the scope of our governance and provisioning products across human and non-human identities. This engineer will shape the architecture of highly available security services, drive convergence across existing access platforms, and enable Microsoft engineers and automated workloads to obtain only the access they need, when it is justified and authorized.

This is a high-impact individual contributor role at the intersection of identity, security, authorization, distributed systems, and platform engineering.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop features for large-scale, distributed software services and solutions using AI-assisted development methods.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to customers and stakeholders across organizational boundaries.
• Design systems with well-defined interfaces across multiple components, participate in code reviews, and use data and telemetry to inform engineering decisions.
• Build high-quality services and components that are modular, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable.
• Champion and model the effective use of AI throughout the software development lifecycle and operational processes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Python
• OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience architecting and designing highly available, resilient, and high-scale distributed systems.
• 5+ years of experience developing backend services using C#.
• Experience with security, identity, authorization, privileged access management, or related technologies.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
