Amazon"s ARI team works closely with Amazon stakeholders to articulate near/mid/long-term innovation requirements and to find and formalize partnerships with world-class researchers and academic startups. As a Principal for Science Investments, you own the full lifecycle: discovery of the world"s most promising researchers, institutions, and emerging technologies; development of the partnerships that bring their work to bear on Amazon"s hardest scientific challenges; and measuring impact to prove and improve the value of every investment.

You"ll scout the global research landscape, see around corners on emerging science, and architect the connections between external innovators and Amazon"s technology teams. You"ll engage across nearly all of Amazon"s technology organizations, influence SVP-level leaders without authority, and shape how Amazon invests in academic research to accelerate long-term innovation.

Key job responsibilities

Discovery: Find What"s Next

  • Scout and identify world-class academic institutions, scientists, startups, consortiums, government organizations, and non-profits that Amazon should partner with in key scientific areas
  • See around corners, tracking emerging technology trends in academia and industry before they become mainstream; bring forward-looking insights to Amazon leadership
  • Maintain a living map of the external research ecosystem and internal technology areas relevant to Amazon"s Horizons:
  • Physical Sciences: robotics, hardware/semiconductors, and related domains
  • Computing Sciences: AI, computing foundations, and related domains
  • Identify key technology blockers across 90%+ of Amazon"s tech teams through structured engagement with Scholars, Research Liaisons, and engineering leaders
  • Separate signal from noise across a vast landscape of potential partners and research opportunities

Development: Build the Connections

  • Develop and execute research investment strategies for all businesses investing $1M+ in academic partnerships
  • Formalize partnerships with world-class researchers and academic startups aligned to Amazon"s near-, mid-, and long-term innovation requirements
  • Structure engagements (Centers, Hubs, ARA, sponsored research) that maximize business impact
  • Translate business problems into research proposals; coordinate across orgs to avoid duplication and amplify shared interests
  • Serve as a single-threaded leader aligned to specific Amazon Horizons, minimizing silos within partnership communities

Measuring Impact: Prove It Works

  • Track Amazon-wide consumption of research outputs
  • Measure projected and realized business value for all academic research investments
  • Deliver reporting that drives future investment decisions and establishes guardrails against waste

About the Company

A

Amazon.com Inc

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
