Position Summary Information

General Description of Position

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of Tutoring and Transitions, tutors will assist college students with assignments and classes. Tutors will work on-site at a correctional facility. All tutors receive paid training. Subject areas needed include math, business, science, and computer/information technology. Please specify your area of expertise in your cover letter.

This position is within the Prison Education Program (PEP). Prior experience teaching in a prison context is preferred. Training and orientation are provided by the correctional facilities and Southeast Community College's Prison Education Program. This is a part-time temporary position.

Essential Functions

Provide Academic Support during Assigned Hours

Aid students by (1) providing clarification of instructions, information, and concepts of student assignments, (2) assisting students to increase subject-specific competencies, (3) promoting independent learning strategies to boost student self-confidence, and (4) promoting effective study practices needed to master content. Always be punctual for appointments or assigned hours and notify the Director of appointment cancellations.

Functions as a Member of the Tutoring and Learning Center Team

Interact with colleagues, students, and staff in a manner that promotes a positive image of SCC and the Tutoring and Learning Center, which promotes/supports instructional and institutional referral services such as retention, accommodations, counseling, and/or other student services.

Record Maintenance

Maintains records associated with students receiving tutoring and assists in creating reports on such data when needed.

Promote Positive Communication

Promote, support, and incorporate the College's positive communication processes with reflective and transparent communication, compassion, and respect toward the views and ideas of others,

Promote a Culture of Belonging

Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to contribute. Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment. Support the College's policies and programming related to access, fair employment, and equal opportunities for all.

Marginal Functions

  • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices and learn new tutoring techniques, including distance tutoring.
  • Assists with public relations activities such as campus tours and classroom presentations.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with the PEP team, program chairs, faculty, adjuncts, staff, and student service units.
  • Refers students to student support services as needed.
  • Assists the Director of Tutoring and Transitions with the acquisition of resource materials and data appropriate for inclusion in the Tutoring and Learning Center.
  • Organizes a tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence.
  • Maintain required records
  • Teach and implement student success skills, study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Subject competency in the area of tutoring
  • Ability to effectively build rapport and exhibit good communication skills with students
  • Knowledge and execution of an appropriate pedagogical approach to tutoring that supports learner-centered strategies
  • Check email daily and use proper phone and email etiquette to set up appointments, answer questions, and collaborate with the Director.
  • Ability to work and communicate with students and staff of diverse academic and personal backgrounds
  • Patient, empathetic, enthusiastic, and confidential.
  • Respect for different learning styles
  • Ability to listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions
  • Ability to manage time
  • Ability to apply appropriate computer skills needed for subject matter such as word processing and use of subject-utilized websites and online tutoring systems.
  • Ability to safely lift, push, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to tolerate considerable walking, bending, standing, and moving in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
  • The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed at least one semester of College.
  • Completed intended courses to tutor with a Grade B or higher.

Desired Qualifications

  • Teaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience.
  • Written Recommendation from a college instructor, college advisor, program chair, academic dean, or director of tutoring for each subject desiring to tutor or with previous teaching experience.
  • Prior experience teaching in a prison context.
  • Familiarity with community colleges and community college students
  • Math tutors recommend completing Calculus 2
  • Writing tutors recommend having completed Composition 2
