    Job Description

    Overview:

    Inserts and monitors peripherally placed central venous (PICC), mid-line, peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters.  Acts as a resource and consultant for staff with regard to IV therapy assessment, products and procedures.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Maintains competencies in the field
    2. Obtain ongoing education related to management of vascular access devices.
    3. Inserts PICC line and mid-line catheters, determines placement via Xray follow-up and documents procedure.
    4. Assist staff by monitoring PICC and mid-lines, declotting, performing dressing changes when needed, and discontinuing catheters.
    5. Assist with difficult peripheral IV insertions.
    6. Plans evaluated, and implements interventions for solving IV related patient care problems.
    7. Provides IV instruction and/or information to nursing staff, students, physicians, patients and their families.
    8. Participates in research and quality improvement studies related to IV therapy.
    9. Maintains an on-going logbook of PICC insertion data.
    10. Keeps current on advances in IV therapy.
    11. Performs initial and annual RN competency. Recommended training ACLS.
    12. Attends an educational course including theoretical components and hands on practicum with clinical supervision conducted by a competent nurse expert in the field of vascular access device insertion. This course includes: anatomy, physiology, care and maintenance, pharmacology, patient education, patient selection, emergency and non-emergency complication management, sterile technique, insertion with ultrasound, quality assurance management, and data collection.
    13. Initial clinical competency is assessed by a competent, qualified, and knowledgeable RN observing 5 successful insertions.
    14. Annual clinical competency is assessment by a competent, qualified, and knowledgeable RN by observing 1 successful insertion. In addition the RN must:
    15. Must maintain competency by inserting several PICCs each month.
    16. Participate and review performance improvement data, review of manufacturer information, and evidence based practice.

    Qualifications:
    • Current Alabama RN licensure.
    • Two years or clinical experience.
    • Must have demonstrated competency and proficiency in intravenous therapy.
    • Professional Infusion Nursing certification preferred.
    • Demonstrated positive relationship with co-workers and effective communication skills.
    • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

    • Medium work.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Must be able to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.
    • Must be able to reach reasonable distances in any direction.
    • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit and stoop.
    • Must be able to run in an emergency.
    • Must have the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull and carry objects.
    • Must be able to move fingers in a coordinated manner and must be ablet o feel and perceive temperature, texture, shape and size with fingertips.
    • Must be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Must possess stamina to work prolonged shifts.
    • Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
    • Physical presence onsite is essential.
