As a Substance Abuse Counselor supporting Burn and Trauma Services, you'll provide critical emotional support, screenings, and interventions for patients navigating life-changing injuries-helping them rebuild resilience and regain control.

You'll work alongside an interdisciplinary care team to ensure every patient receives compassionate, holistic care that addresses both their physical and emotional well-being.

Highlights

  • Provide frontline emotional and behavioral support to burn and trauma patients during critical moments in their recovery journey.
  • Partner with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes through integrated, patient-centered care.

Essential Functions

  • Deliver Patient Counseling & Support: Provide cognitive and emotional support to patients in Trauma, Burn ICU (BICU), and inpatient settings to promote coping and recovery.
  • Conduct Screenings & Interventions: Administer evidence-based screenings (e.g., PTSD, substance use) and deliver brief interventions tailored to patient needs.
  • Collaborate Across Care Teams: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to address psychosocial factors impacting recovery and care progression.
  • Coordinate Resources & Referrals: Provide psychoeducation, connect patients and caregivers with resources, and coordinate post-discharge mental health referrals.
  • Document & Track Patient Care: Maintain accurate documentation of sessions, screenings, and interventions in accordance with clinical and regulatory standards.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health, or related field required
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience required
  • Experience with crisis intervention or acute care settings preferred
  • Licensure or certification (e.g., LCSW, LCMHC, LCAS) is a plus but not required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to support patients in emotionally complex situations
  • Ability to perform crisis intervention and trauma-informed care
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, high-acuity healthcare environments
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary care teams
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to manage sensitive patient interactions with empathy and professionalism

Provides counseling services for patients on the Burn/Trauma Service. Services include support, screenings, and brief interventions for the patients, as well as psychoeducation for patients and caregivers. Coordinates and collaborates with the other healthcare providers to improve patient care and recovery.
