U. S. Steel has an immediate opening for a Process Control Engineer within the Process Control Steelmaking organization. This position will be responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and enhancing process control hardware and software solutions in a heavy industrial environment.
Responsibilities:
- Translate business requirements into industrial application solutions and provide cost-effective technical solutions.
- Design and implement control logic and automation sequences.
- Configure and tune drives for various mill equipment including roughing and finishing stands, coilers, shears, and handling systems.
- Develop and maintain documentation including I/O lists, logic diagrams, and functional design specifications.
- Support production hardware/software, SCADA systems, HMI applications, and LAN communications, and integrate PLCs with HMIs, SCADA, and higher‑level automation systems.
- Lead troubleshooting, fault analysis, and optimization during system startup and early production.
- Participate in FAT, SAT, and site commissioning for PLC and drive systems.
- Implement robust safety interlocks and emergency controls and ensure adherence to U.S. Steel Principles, Change Management, and Ongoing Continuous Improvement Programming.
Skills:
- Automation platform experience (e.g., Siemens SIMATIC S7 / TIA Portal, SINAMICS / SIMOTION, Rockwell FactoryTalk, Allen‑Bradley ControlLogix, ABB AC500, Mitsubishi MELSEC iQ-R, Schneider Electric Modicon, Emerson DeltaV)
- AC/DC motor control, sensors, actuators, instrumentation
- HMI/SCADA platforms (e.g., WinCC)

- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities

- The applicant will support production hardware and software applications, SCADA systems, Graphical HMI applications and LAN communications.
- The applicant will be knowledgeable in industrial plant process control systems, including programming and technical support.
- Applicants with a minimum of an Associate's Degree or higher in Electrical, Automation, or Control System Engineering, or Equivalent Work Experience will be considered.
- Capable of analyzing short- and long-term hardware, software, equipment, and instrumentation requirements and providing appropriate and cost-effective technical solutions.
- Capable of providing oral and written communication interfaces with departmental management, operations management, operating crews, control system support personnel, system support personnel and others.
