Description:

Process Engineer I, or "PE" I, is an intermediate technical operations role for individuals who demonstrate moderate to highly proficient levels of skill in their understanding of the overall process and in their daily roles of continuous process improvement, troubleshooting, operating equipment, conducting machine maintenance, and training new hires. They continually use troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve issues and come up with creative ways to prevent recurring problems from happening. They demonstrate an understanding of the process, equipment, and machines and use these skills to train and educate others. They also demonstrate the ability to work independently or in cross-functional teams. They show an aptitude for continuous improvement in both the process and themselves.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

A Process Engineer I will be expected to demonstrate strength in the following areas as part of their role:

  • Finding and eliminating safety risks that may exist to promote a safe and effective work environment.
  • Ability to create, train, monitor and maintain Centerlines for any process area.
  • Knowledge of raw materials and all quality testing required to demonstrate material acceptance.
  • Understanding of each process area: Repulping, Delivery, and Forming Machines
  • The ability to take samples and perform standard testing alongside quality techs, operators, and material handlers.

o Expected to learn more in-depth testing processes and techniques when working with Process Engineers and peers.

  • Strictly follow quality control work instructions, standard operation procedures, and safety protocol
  • An understanding and ability to demonstrate knowledge of the following Repulping process steps:

o Refining and how refining impacts freeness

o Deflaking

o Screening and Cleaning

  • An understanding and ability to demonstrate knowledge of the following Delivery System process steps:

o Dilution

o Chemical Dosing and dosing order

  • An understanding and ability to demonstrate knowledge of the following Forming Machine process steps:

o Forming Drum / Forming

o EOAT

o Hot Pressing

o Trimming / Coining

  • General understanding of process control and the fundamental operation of different types of valves, instruments, and equipment
  • General understanding of slurry dewatering and important factors that impact drainage in pulp systems.
  • An understanding of process chemistry, how chemicals are dosed, and the ability to troubleshoot process or machines issues related to chemical dosing.
  • An understanding of pulp coating process(es)

o The ability to troubleshoot coating: process, raw materials, etc.

o Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between coating and product formation.

  • An understanding of quality criteria for finished product and the ability to troubleshoot process issues relating to quality defects.
  • The ability to work with Process Engineers or peers to better understand process equipment, process flow, and to continuously improve their troubleshooting capabilities.
  • The ability to work with Subject Matter Experts to better understand the process of producing Pulp Products, selecting raw materials, developing finished product performance.
  • The ability to work with vendors and suppliers for new equipment installation and new equipment startup or optimization.
  • Demonstrate the capability of running and managing trials either with Process Engineering/CFI or independently.

o The ability to identify rationale for running trials or proposing process changes.

o The ability to collect data before, during, and after trials. Learn how to analyze data and be able to report the outcome.

o Follow the DMAIC concept for process improvement (and/or other LSS concepts)

  • Demonstrated ability to work with the Maintenance group.

o Support PM's

o Identify spare part opportunities.

o Develop best practices for equipment maintenance, including procedures and SOP's.

  • Knowledge with FANUC/ABB programing, automation or robotics experience is preferred.
  • Complete tasks assigned by supervisor or management as necessary.
  • Other duties as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Comply with GMP
  • General use of Microsoft office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

o Develop and write Standard Operating Procedures or Work Instructions as needed.

o Present for the local plant leadership team and/or peers.

o Document and track process changes to better understand the impacts of changes and the importance of Centerlines.

  • Independent troubleshooting skills
  • The ability to work independently on projects on an as-needed basis.
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Detail oriented with the ability to multitask.
  • Must have a positive attitude towards teamwork and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications:

  • High School GD with Trade School, Technical Secondary School or Above, majoring in engineering, mechatronics, automation, or mechanics preferred.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years manufacturing industry experience, preferably pulp or paper related.
  • 3-5 years of experience in process troubleshooting.
  • Technical background or previous work experience involving process troubleshooting.
