The primary responsibility of this position is to independently perform clinic reception duties, determine patient eligibility for sliding fee scale discounts, collect payments, and maintain medical records for clinical services in the Iredell County Health Department. This position independently applies established policies and procedures related to patient eligibility, billing, and payment collection while supporting clinic operations at both the Statesville and Mooresville locations.

Examples of Duties

Responsibilities include supporting Maternal Health (MH), Family Planning (FP), Child Health (CH), General Clinic, Immunizations (IMM), Dental, Walk-in services, and Mobile Health Unit programs. This position is cross trained to provide clerical support across multiple service areas to ensure efficient clinic operations. Tasks performed by the position include, but are not limited to, registering and checking in patients, updating and reviewing financial eligibility information for billing, scheduling appointments, switchboard, general data entry, and scanning and maintaining medical records. The successful candidate must be able to perform all assigned duties accurately and efficiently while handling confidential information with professionalism, courtesy and tact.

Top candidates for this position must follow written policies and procedures to perform work independently, have strong math skills, are organized, articulate, and present themselves professionally & courteously. Must be able to problem solve and work independently following training. Regular work hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, (possible flex schedule, if approved). Availability during emergencies and exercise is required and all applicants must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Drivers License. Work may be performed in the field and within a mobile medical unit, requiring the ability to work outdoors in various weather and temperature conditions.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of high school or equivalent and two years of clerical or secretarial experience; or completion of a two-year associate's degree in business administration.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills to interact with patients from diverse backgrounds with tact and professionalism. Ability to strictly follow and independently apply complex written policies and procedures regarding eligibility and billing. Strong ability to problem-solve and make independent decisions once initial training is complete Ability to type with accuracy and speed is required; must take initiative and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Typing, data entry, and mathematical tests will be given.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

Experience working in electronic health records, attention to detail, document scanning with meta-data knowledge, and bilingual English/Spanish are a plus. Experience in a healthcare setting with knowledge of medical terminology is highly desired.
