The Processing Superintendent is a key management position with significant involvement and responsibility for the results of the final produced product.  Under the direction of the Operations Manager, this Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all raw milk receiving operations at a dairy processing facility. This position ensures that incoming milk is received, sampled, tested, documented, stored, and transferred safely and efficiently while complying with food safety regulations, quality standards, and company policies. The supervisor manages receiving personnel, coordinates milk intake schedules, and maintains accurate records of milk deliveries and inventories. The supervisor interfaces with truck drivers from various suppliers.

As a Milk Processing leader directs daily dairy manufacturing operations. Is responsible to oversee every batch preparation ensuring compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations. This role optimizes production efficiency, manages facility budgets, and leads processing staff to deliver high-quality dairy products while minimizing waste as part of the usage variance reduction program.


Qualifications: 

Education

  • Associate degree in Dairy Science, Food Science, Agriculture, Operations Management, or related field preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • 3–5 years of dairy manufacturing or milk receiving experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of dairy processing operations and raw milk handling requirements.
  • Microsoft Office package
  • Clear analytical thinking

Key management activities:

·       Production Oversight: Manage daily operations, including receiving raw milk, pasteurization, standardization.

·       Team Leadership: Recruit, train, and supervise processing floor staff. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and safety.

·       Process Optimization: Identify and implement strategies to reduce production waste, cut costs, and improve operational efficiency.

·       Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure all processing machinery (e.g., separators, homogenizers, pumps, heat exchangers) runs optimally.

·       Inventory & Supply Chain: Oversee inventory levels of ingredients, milk and batches, to meet demand without overstocking

·       Ensure active collaboration with Research and Development (RD) & quality departments to develop and work into innovation developments to ensure       the new launches are on time and according to the market expectation.

·       Collaborate to develop methods to improve plant strategies to optimize the resources, implement CILA operational routines, Centerline standardization, FIFO materials, reduction of usage variance and create standard SOP and OPL for the team.

  • Guarantee the correct coordination with packaging in production to deliver the batches on time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Personnel Management

  • Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate milk receiving operators and technicians.
  • Enforce safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Provide coaching and corrective action when necessary.
  • Develop employee skills through ongoing training.

Quality Assurance & Food Safety

  • Ensure milk samples are collected according to established procedures.
  • Verify testing for temperature, antibiotics, adulteration, and quality specifications.
  • Reject or hold milk that does not meet company or regulatory standards.
  • Maintain compliance with FDA, USDA, PMO (Pasteurized Milk Ordinance), HACCP, GMPs, and company food safety programs.
  • Participate in audits and inspections.

Inventory and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of milk receipts, storage tank inventories, and transfers.
  • Review receiving reports and reconcile discrepancies.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate shortages or excesses to production management.
  • Ensure all receiving documentation is complete and filed properly.
  • Equipment and Facility Management
  • Ensure receiving equipment, pumps, valves, storage tanks, and sampling devices are operated correctly.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance with the maintenance department.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and initiate corrective actions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of receiving areas.

Milk Receiving & processing operations

  • Supervise daily milk receiving activities from tanker trucks.
  • Ensure proper unloading, transfer, and storage of raw milk.
  • Monitor receiving schedules and coordinate with milk haulers, producers, and plant operations.
  • Verify delivery documentation, weights, volumes, and quality records.
  • Maintain adequate raw milk inventory to support production needs.
  • Ensure standardization for every batch preparation with the team in all shifts
  • Equipment maintenance- Schedule equipment rebuilds and service with maintenance department.  
  •  Scheduling- Work with the scheduling department to determine what products need to be made and when.  
  • Ordering- Order raw milk, cream, sugar, and chemicals.  Determine how much raw milk, cream, sugar, and chemical needs to be ordered and when.
  • Review paperwork- Review paperwork and hold a PCQI certificate to verify CCP is being met.  Review records to ensure proper temperatures are met outlined in PMO. Ensure that proper ingredients and amounts are added to dairy mixes. 
  • Schedule equipment testing- Schedule equipment testing with state of Nebraska to ensure equipment is in compliance with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance- Investigate product deviations and implement corrective actions.
  • Partner with Research and Development- Produce product that is formulated from R&D to meet company expectations.  Update training records to ensure operators are up to date with current formulas and practices.

Safety and Compliance

  • Conduct safety meetings and inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards.
  • Investigate and document incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
