Employment Type: Full-Time
A growing engineered-products manufacturer is seeking a Product Development Engineer to support the design, development, testing and commercialization of new products and product improvements.
This position will work across the full product-development lifecycle—from initial concept and engineering design through prototyping, testing, validation and production release.
The role works closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Purchasing and other internal teams to develop products that meet performance, cost, quality and manufacturability requirements.
Design and develop new products, components and mechanical systems.
Improve and modify existing products based on performance, manufacturing and customer requirements.
Support projects from initial concept through final production release.
Develop engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
Create and maintain bills of material and product documentation.
Coordinate prototype builds and engineering evaluations.
Develop and execute product testing and validation plans.
Analyze test results and recommend design improvements.
Perform design verification and support engineering problem-solving activities.
Work closely with Manufacturing to ensure designs can be produced efficiently and consistently.
Apply Design for Manufacturability principles during product development.
Partner with Supply Chain and Purchasing on material and component selection.
Work with Quality to address product, manufacturing and performance issues.
Evaluate product cost and identify opportunities to improve cost without sacrificing performance or quality.
Troubleshoot technical issues during prototype and production stages.
Support continuous improvement of existing products and designs.
Participate in design reviews and cross-functional product-development meetings.
Provide technical support to other departments as needed.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Experience in product design, product development, manufacturing engineering or mechanical design.
Experience taking engineered products from concept through manufacturing is strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of mechanical design and manufacturing processes.
Experience creating or interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
Experience with 3D CAD software.
Understanding of bills of material and engineering change processes.
Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
Ability to communicate effectively with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and other engineering disciplines.
Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities.
Engineered-to-order or industrial manufacturing environment.
New product development and product launch.
Prototype development and testing.
Design validation and verification.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
Cost reduction/value engineering.
Fabricated or assembled industrial equipment.
Working with suppliers on engineered components.
The strongest candidate will be a hands-on engineer who enjoys both design and manufacturing. They should be comfortable developing a product on the computer, working through technical details with other engineers, and then going onto the manufacturing floor to see how the design is actually being built.
This role is a good fit for an engineer who wants ownership of products from concept → design → prototype → testing → production.
