Product Engineer

Back Cove Yachts Rockland, ME | Full-Time | On-Site

Position Summary

Back Cove Yachts seeks a skilled Product Engineer to support the full lifecycle of our premium yachts, from concept development through production and customer delivery. This role serves as a key technical authority, ensuring designs meet our standards for quality, performance, manufacturability, and serviceability. The Product Engineer works cross-functionally with design, production, purchasing, and customer service to deliver engineering solutions that uphold our brand values and meet cost, schedule, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Engineering

  • Support development of new and existing models from concept through production release.
  • Create and maintain 2D/3D CAD models, drawings, assemblies, BOMs, and change notices.
  • Collaborate with production to resolve build issues and improve manufacturability.
  • Coordinate prototype builds and sea trials; capture feedback and implement improvements.
  • Provide technical support for warranty, service, and field-related issues.

Problem Solving & Improvement

  • Identify and document design or production issues.
  • Apply root-cause analysis and lead cross-functional problem-solving efforts.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions to improve quality and reliability.
  • Support continuous improvement across models, systems, and processes.

Administrative & Facility Support

  • Maintain accurate drawings, reports, and engineering documentation.
  • Manage multiple projects and meet schedule commitments.
  • Support document control, design standards, and engineering systems.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and assist with facility improvement efforts.

Qualifications

  • A degree in engineering or industrial design is preferred; however, equivalent technical training or production-focused engineering experience is also accepted.
  • 3+ years of experience in boatbuilding or manufacturing engineering preferred.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidEdge, Rhino, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of marine systems, composites, and production processes.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
  • ABYC Certifications or PE licensure is a plus.
  • CNC programming and 3D printing experience is a plus.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and regulatory standards.
  • Strong math and computer skills, including spreadsheets and modeling tools.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding proprietary product information.
  • The Product Engineer works cross-functionally with design, production, quality control, purchasing, sales & marketing, and customer service.
  • Works under general supervision with expected independent judgment on technical matters.
