Job Summary

The University Record's website, email, and social media are its primary channels for readership, alongside the printed edition. This position is the Record's main production role, responsible for producing the printed edition, publishing stories and artwork on the website, creating social media graphics, and helping compile the email newsletter. The role requires basic editing skills and working directly with copy to prepare it for multiple platforms.

Responsibilities*

• Design and produce the printed University Record on its publishing schedule, including layout, imagery, and basic print advertising
• Edit and format story copy for print, web, email, and social placement, adapting length and presentation to each platform
• Load stories, photography, and artwork onto the University Record website
• Design graphics for social media posts that adapt Record stories and franchises for platform-specific formats
• Assist in compiling and formatting the Record's email newsletter
• Maintain consistent visual branding across print, web, email, and social channels
• Coordinate with editors and writers to keep copy and visual elements on schedule across all four channels

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communications, journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
• Experience designing for both print and digital/web platforms
• Experience with a web content management system for publishing stories, photos, and artwork
• Experience creating graphics for social media platforms
• Ability to edit for length and fit, and accurately format copy for different platforms
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines across print, web, email, and social schedules
• Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with editors and writers

Desired Qualifications*

• Experience with email newsletter platforms
• Familiarity with basic HTML/CSS
• Experience in a higher education, news, or media production environment
• Familiarity with digital accessibility standards (alt text, video captions)
• Experience producing short-form photo or video content for social platforms

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

The position will be primarily on-site in Ann Arbor with the opportunity for a hybrid schedule in accordance with operational needs.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. The salary range for the lower classification (Communications Production Associate-104028) is $50,000 - $55,000.
