The Production and Materials Planner is responsible for delivering the strategic production schedule and plan that efficiently use resources and generate lowest cost results while strategically procuring raw materials used in manufacturing to optimize supply and demand that ensure timely delivery of finished products to customers. It is a highly visible supply chain role that performs duties to support planning, scheduling, and purchasing activities.

This role requires an understanding of customer and production priorities and coordination with account managers and/or production management. This role collaborates with Manufacturing, Sales, Customer Service, Quality, and Supply Chain Operations (including external partners) regarding planning, scheduling, and purchasing activities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the generation of manufacturing orders and daily/weekly production schedules for the movement of materials through the production process following the master capacity and demand plans.
  • Collaborates and communicates with manufacturing, customer service, and logistics regarding material buy plans and delivery schedules affecting timely completion and delivery of customer orders.
  • Coordinates and expedites the flow of work and materials within or between work centers to provide smooth and timely flow in the factory and expedite critical production orders as required.
  • Acts as a resource for creative problem solving and works with production managers to adjust production schedules as needed to meet business and customer needs and facilitate schedule achievement.
  • Maintains finished goods inventory at target levels to ensure high service levels.
  • Responsible for activities to level workload with capacity once the factory is scheduled, including capacity or workload adjustment activities such as moving orders in, utilizing cross trained employees, and recommending overtime.
  • Establishes and reinforces a level of accountability from managers as to the importance of working and adhering to a written schedule.
  • Manages conversion of raw materials and WIP, to reduce working capital and optimize inventory turns, and to determine appropriate lead times for product value streams, ensuring material availability.
  • Participates in meetings with key managers to eliminate inefficiencies in communication of issues and problems with supporting facts and data.
  • Responsible for driving continuous improvement metrics and cost savings activities.
  • Works as a team player with all functional groups to address production demands and resolve issues related to inventory, production schedules, and service levels.
  • Oversees generation of material purchase orders based on the master capacity and demand plans using the best methodology for material planning (i.e. safety stocks, reorder points, Kanban, etc.).
  • Works closely with material suppliers and logistics to ensure on-time delivery of raw materials in accordance with capacity and demand plans, production schedules, and material and/or manufacturing lead-times.
  • Responsible for creation of Bill of Materials lists and to ensure material requirements in planning tools and systems are relevant and accurate.
  • Notifies Planning Manager of any issues (i.e. material not coming in as planned, demand coming in stronger than forecasted, supplier or transportation delays, etc.) and expedites critical material orders as required.
  • Tracks and plans inventories of key raw materials as required by our business and develop solutions to resolve any supply issues.
  • Ensure that customer and vendor relationships are handled in a professional, ethical, and uncompromising manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring, where applicable, the product safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and legality of all products produced and sold.

Required Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in business and 5+ years of production planning, scheduling, and procurement experience with proven ability to coordinate all aspects of materials, manpower and machine schedules for a production operation.
  • 2+ years of experience in the corrugated and/or folding carton industries. Food packaging experience preferred.
  • Proven data analytics experience. Advanced MS Office skills, particularly in Excel modeling.
  • Ability to document workflows, processes, and procedures for varying functional and organizational areas.
  • Innovative problem-solving capabilities with special attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Experience developing and customizing requirements, processes, and design documentation.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task in high volume, fast-paced work environment with a biased towards action.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with all employees through senior leadership level.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing systems and best practices; SAP and Dynamics GP experience, familiarization with LEAN Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement principles preferred.
