Summary:
- Shift: 8 days on/6 days off; 10-hour days up to 12-hour days; with the possibility of more days on and fewer days off
- Location: Various locations throughout the company states (Preferred to be local to Jacksonville)
- Travel: Mandatory, as this is a CDL position and you will be required to travel to different site locations periodically
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of various railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices.
- Perform tasks associated with maintaining and dismantling signal structures and components such as foundations, equipment housing, cable, and switches.
- Dig holes and trenches with a shovel and/or pick.
- Operate non-power hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, files, wrenches, pliers, shovels, picks, cutters, and sledgehammers.
- Operate manual machinery and heavy equipment.
- Unreel and install wires and cables overhead and underground.
- Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures.
- Perform any other work not mentioned above that is required to construct or rehabilitate railroad signals.
Requirements:
- Class A CDL is required. You must obtain a Class A CDL license within 90 days after your employment probationary period (90 days from your start date).
- Must have a current driver's license.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
- Applicants must be able to perform heavy physical labor.
- Experience in the operations of a backhoe and trencher.
- Ability to dig a trench using a backhoe with limited training and/or supervision.
- Must have a dependable form of transportation.
Preferred Skills:
- Previous railroad experience is preferred.
- Previous construction experience and/or experience operating construction equipment.
- Ability to communicate and work well both independently and with others.
Work Conditions:
- Outside work is required regardless of weather conditions.
- Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires.
- Work in many rural remote geographic areas.
- Occasionally at heights of 20 feet or more above the ground.
- Away from home for several days at a time, with travel constituting 95-100% of the position.
