    The Production Space and Cage Manager supports Film & Media Studies courses involving digital cinema, film, sound, and other time-based media. The manager oversees the equipment cage and departmental production spaces, supports faculty and students in carrying out curricular and production goals, maintains production equipment and facilities, supervises student employees, and develops safe and consistent studio workflows and best practices. The position also supports the department's expansion of larger, collaborative studio productions and works with campus partners on production facilities, technical systems, and shared media resources.

    Description

    The Production Space and Cage Manager supports Film & Media Studies courses involving digital cinema, film, sound, and other time-based media. The manager oversees the department's equipment cage and production spaces; maintains production equipment and facilities; hires, trains, schedules, and supervises student employees; and provides hands-on technical support to faculty and students. The position plays a central role in expanding studio-based and larger team productions, developing safe production and set-building practices, and creating consistent workflows and best practices for departmental production spaces.

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in film, media production, television, broadcast, digital media, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
    • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in film/media production, studio operations, equipment management, or academic media services.
    • Demonstrated experience hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating student employees.
    • Experience supporting studio and soundstage operations, set building, production safety, and larger team-based film productions.
    • Demonstrated experience managing an equipment checkout operation, including reservations, circulation, inventory control, preventative maintenance, and repair coordination.

    Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

    • Strong working knowledge of digital cinema cameras, lenses, lighting, grip, field sound, and studio-production equipment.
    • Ability to teach technical workshops and provide hands-on support to students and faculty.
    • Strong organizational, communication, customer-service, and project-management skills.
    • Ability to develop clear procedures, documentation, and production best practices.
    • Ability to establish clear expectations, assign work, provide ongoing feedback, and manage student staffing in support of equipment-cage operations, production spaces, and departmental activities.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • MFA or other advanced degree in film, media production, or a related field.
    • Experience working in higher education and supporting curricular production.
    • Experience with 16mm film cameras and workflows, studio lighting and DMX control, set construction and soundstage operations, and professional digital cinema workflows.
    • Experience producing or supporting larger collaborative film productions.
    • Familiarity with Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign, Audition, and other current production and post-production tools.

    Equipment Cage Operations

    • Manage equipment checkout and reservations, inventory control, equipment readiness, preventative maintenance, repair coordination, and student employee operations.

    Production Spaces and Studio Operations

    • Manage and maintain departmental production spaces and studios, including equipment organization, studio infrastructure, production workflows, and development of additional production spaces as departmental needs evolve.

    Student and Faculty Production Support

    • Support students and faculty from project planning through production, with particular emphasis on larger collaborative productions, digital cinema workflows, lighting, sound, grip, and studio-based work.

    Percentage Of Time 20% Description

    Safety, Set Building, and Technical Training

    • Develop and teach best practices for safe equipment use, studio operations, set construction, lighting and grip practices, and production-space safety; create documentation, procedures, and hands-on workshops supporting curricular needs.

    • Collaborate with Film & Media Studies faculty, technical staff, and campus partners on equipment planning, production systems, facilities, shared resources, and implementation of new production technologies.
