Contract Length: 08/17/2026 – 11/30/2026Pay Range: $30-$34/hr. *Pay offered is based on experience, expertise, credentialing, and education.
Duties: Job Summary
We are seeking a Professional Coding Specialist I to review patient medical records and accurately translate clinical documentation into appropriate evaluation & management (E/M), diagnostic, and procedural codes for insurance claims.
Key Responsibilities
- Review medical records following patient visits and procedures.
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT-4/E&M codes.
- Perform coding for inpatient, surgical, and pediatric cases.
- Identify coding and billing errors and documentation gaps.
- Apply hospital policies, payer guidelines, and government regulations.
- Resolve straightforward and complex coding issues.
- Maintain coding accuracy, productivity, and timely completion of workload.
- Communicate effectively with clinical and administrative staff.
- Work independently while collaborating with the coding team.
- Adapt to changing workflows and responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical coding.
- Experience with ICD-10 and CPT-4, including E/M coding.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Experience with inpatient, surgical, and/or pediatric coding preferred/required based on assignment.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Education
- High school diploma/GED minimum.
- College-level coursework or relevant experience in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Completion of a coding course covering ICD-10 and CPT-4/E&M.
Required Certification
One of the following certifications is required:
- CPC-A
- CPC
- CCS-P
- RHIT
- RHIA
- Appropriate AAPC specialty certification
Preferred Certifications
- COSC – Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder
- CEMC – Certified Evaluation and Management Coder
