About the Role

The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) is looking for an Economist to support high-impact research, data analysis, and recurring publication workflows. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with large datasets, translating data into meaningful insights, and contributing to widely distributed reports and media-facing content.

This person will work closely with senior team members on analytical projects, real estate market research, and the development of new metrics and data products. The role combines hands-on data work, clear communication, and strong organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities

Data & Research
  • Conduct statistical and economic analyses using large, complex datasets.
  • Support development of new metrics, indexes, and analytical frameworks.
  • Maintain and update recurring data pipelines, models, and standardized metrics.
  • Assist with research on topics such as housing market trends, pricing dynamics, investor activity, and affordability.

Reporting & Publications
  • Prepare data, charts, and analytical insights for recurring reports (e.g., Investor Report, Equity Report, Case-Shiller commentary).
  • Draft initial sections of analytical reports, blogs, and press materials.
  • Perform quality checks on published data and visualizations.

Media & Communications Support
  • Draft background notes, talking points, or responses for media inquiries.
  • Summarize key findings for internal partners and external audiences.
  • Help prepare presentations and materials for external events or interviews.

Cross-Team Collaboration
  • Coordinate with other internal teams to provide data support or clarify methodology.
  • Help standardize analytical processes and documentation.
  • Assist in developing repeatable workflows for analysis and data releases.

Job Qualifications:

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Public Policy, or a related quantitative field.
  • Master's degree preferred but not required.

Experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in data analysis, applied economics, market research, or related analytical work.
  • Experience working with large datasets and producing recurring analytical outputs.

Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in Python or R for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Strong skills with SQL or similar tools for querying large datasets.
  • Experience with statistical methods such as regression analysis, time series analysis, or index construction.
  • Proficiency with Excel and data visualization tools (Tableau, matplotlib, ggplot, etc.).
  • Ability to create clean, clear charts and data tables for broad audiences.

Communication Skills
  • Strong analytical writing skills; ability to translate complex findings into accessible language.
  • Ability to summarize trends, insights, and key takeaways for reports or media teams.
  • Comfortable collaborating with cross-functional partners and contributing to shared deliverables.

Work Style
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Able to manage recurring deadlines and multiple projects at once.
  • Curious, self-directed, and comfortable working independently in a fast-moving environment.
  • Willingness to take initiative and propose new analytical angles or improvements.
