Duties Description Gain and utilize expertise in the design of pavements, slopes, drainage systems, water supply, traffic analysis, signals, lighting, and related civil infrastructure.Develop and complete sealed engineering studies and designs for highway, rail, aviation, landscape, and nonmotorized transportation projects.Provide direct supervision, training, and management of engineers, technicians, landscape architects, and analysts.Update portions of the Highway Design Manual and deliver related training.Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.Minimum Qualifications New York State Professional Engineer license with current registration plus a qualifying bachelor's degree in engineering (Civil, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a recognized concentration in these fields). Alternatively, one year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience paired with the license.For promotional candidates: must be a qualified employee of New York State, with one year of permanent competitive or 55‑b/55‑c service as an Assistant Engineer (Civil).Eligibility and Additional Comments Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis.During the NY HELPS Program, the title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment without examination; the applicant must still meet the minimum qualifications.Employees hired under NY HELPS will later convert to competitive status without examination, gaining the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees.Compensation and Benefits Starting salary: $98,298 (base $91,298 + $7,000 geographic).
