About the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech currently has over 650 undergraduate students, nearly 320 graduate students, 55 tenure-track faculty members, and 4 Professors of the Practice. Women comprise 50% of the undergraduate population, and more than 29% of the undergraduate student population identifies as a member of under-represented minority groups. Thirteen faculty members are women, and eight faculty members identify as a member of under-represented minority groups. Twenty-six faculty members hold endowed chairs or professorships with 30% of them being women faculty. The Schools Strategic Vision is available at www.ce.gatech.edu/strategic-vision. Job Summary

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (www.cee.gatech.edu) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, invites applications for a non-tenure-track Professor of the Practice faculty position in Transportation Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Schools instructional mission by teaching courses in capstone design, transportation engineering, geometric design of transportation facilities, and transportation systems. Candidates should bring expertise in one or more specialty areas within transportation engineering, such as site design, traffic engineering and operations, transportation safety, transportation economics and policy, or the environmental impacts associated with transportation and infrastructure projects. The faculty member will draw on their professional expertise, the expertise of Georgia Techs transportation and civil engineering faculty, and their professional network to enrich the curriculum, including by engaging technical experts for guest lectures and seminars that advance creativity and innovation in transportation engineering education.

Responsibilities

The Professor of the Practice faculty will teach up to six courses per academic year, with a primary emphasis on undergraduate instruction. The faculty member will also be expected to mentor a diverse student body and contribute service to the School, Institute, and profession. At a minimum, instructional responsibilities for the Transportation Systems Engineering Professor of the Practice will include:

Capstone Design during the fall and spring semesters, a senior-level interdisciplinary civil and environmental engineering design experience;

Transportation Planning and Design;

Introductory course in transportation engineering; and Civil and Environmental Engineering Systems, which examines infrastructure from a systems perspective.

In addition, the faculty member will develop elective courses in transportation engineering that align with their areas of expertise, such as, but not limited to, Site Development Planning and Design in Transportation or Freeway and Interchange Planning and Design.

While this is a design-focused position, the introduction of other electives may be considered, such as elective courses on Emerging Technologies, Advanced Data and Complex Analytics, AI in industry, Digital Delivery, etc. Teaching responsibilities will focus primarily on undergraduate courses, with potential opportunities to teach selected graduate-level courses.

Required Qualifications

Have substantial bases of experience, normally at least ten (10) to fifteen (15) years, and a national/international reputation for excellence.

Have rich and extensive backgrounds in fields and disciplines related to the school or college of appointment at the Institute.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional engineering, or other applicable, licensure.

MS or Ph.D. in transportation engineering or a closely related field

Experience and leadership in the transportation engineering profession.

Active participation in professional organizations such as ITE, ASCE, WTS, ASHE, TRB, IEEE, ITS, etc.

A passion for teaching and mentoring a diverse student body

Demonstrated ability to help students develop real-world problem solving and critical thinking skills.

The ability to engage students in experiential learning activities and pedagogy that support student success
