    The Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) is seeking students and other interested individuals to fill part-time positions that support CHPC's mission to enable research and innovation through advanced computing infrastructure, technical services, and user support at the University of Utah. Program participants-including undergraduate students, graduate students - receive hands on experience in a professional technical environment. Positions are structured to provide meaningful project work, defined learning or professional development objectives, and supervised access to CHPC systems appropriate to the role.

    This position will be on the software development team, where part-time employees will actively participate in the full enterprise software development lifecycle, data engineering, visualization and analytics, as well as other opportunities to learn and work with high-performance computing (HPC), research computing, ML/AI, and other related domains.

    Candidates selected for this position who are active students will be encouraged to prioritize their coursework over most job duties. This position is intended to complement a formal secondary education, not distract from it.

    Responsibilities

    • Participate in the full software development lifecycle.
    • Work in a command-line terminal environment, often without GUIs.
    • Perform basic system configuration and administration tasks.
    • Continuously learn and iterate on new technologies and projects.
    • Be responsive and communicate in a technical team environment.
    • Manage risks responsibly.

    Minimum Qualifications

    EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

    Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

    Program Assistant,, I: Requires little to no related experience.

    Program Assistant,, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.

    Some background (academic, professional, or self-taught) in software development: comfortable in at least one programming language, such as Python, Javascript, Golang, C, or Rust.

    Preferences

    • Prior experience in any computer-related domain (homelab, robotics, CAD, game development, citizen science, etc.).
    • Familiarity with scientific research processes.
