To assist in the operation of a program or multiple projects within the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS), exercising independent judgment and authority as required. Responsible for all phases of the program, including budget recommendations, program selection, staff supervision, recommendations for future planning, and innovation.

Description of Duties

  • Coordinates program activities and operations to ensure implementation is carried out in accordance with specified objectives, including SGA meetings, trainings, retreats, leadership development programs, elections, special events, and signature initiatives.
  • Supervises and manages the day-to-day activities and personnel of the assigned program.
  • Develops and supervises the implementation of multiple projects or programs, including leadership development initiatives, student internship programs, student engagement activities, and related funding processes.
  • Participates in budget planning and is responsible for controlling expenditures in accordance with budget allocations for the program and university policies.
  • Assists students in understanding university policies, shared governance structures, parliamentary procedure, and SGA governing documents.
  • Assists SGA officers and members with planning, communication, project tracking, and implementation of goals.
  • Conducts formal training, transition planning, and onboarding for student leaders; provides instruction regarding program policies and procedures; and ensures compliance with university policies, procedures, and SGA governing documents.
  • Promotes professionalism, accountability, inclusive leadership, ethical decision-making, and effective communication among SGA members.
  • Supports programming, student engagement opportunities, and operational functions for the DOS office initiatives.
  • Develops marketing, outreach, and communication efforts to promote the DOS office and SGA programs, services, and leadership opportunities.
  • Coordinates long and short-term programs, including performing feasibility studies and estimating program costs.
  • Represents department in official functions.
  • Reviews program records, rosters, reports, forms, correspondence, and other documentation related to SGA operations; evaluates program effectiveness and recommends modifications to methods, procedures, and processes as needed.
  • Drafts brochures, letters, agendas, websites, social media content, and contracts in collaboration with University Marketing.
  • May plan, develop, organize, and coordinate research and survey designs.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars related to the program's mission and goals.
  • Supervises and organizes seminars, conferences, and presentations.
  • Provides appropriate reports as required for the project or program; tracks and maintains historical records, governing documents, assessment data, and reports related to SGA activities and impact.
  • Provides ongoing staff development, on-site demonstrations and field-based experiences related to project or program.
  • Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations associated with and/or receiving benefit from the program; supports the resolution of student concerns through consultation and referral to appropriate university departments.
  • May coordinate and oversee tutorial, counseling, teaching, and/or training activities of the program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited university

Preferred Education

Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Political Science, Public Administration, Communication Studies, Organizational Leadership, Education, Business Administration, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field from an accredited university. Master's degree in a related discipline from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications

None.

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience performing closely related duties, including program planning/coordination or related experience in the appropriate field of the program, or
  • One (1) year of the required experience with a Master's degree, or
  • Five (5) years of the required experience with an Associate Degree or 60 hours of College Credit, or
  • Seven (7) years of the required experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Experience

Experience advising or working with student government associations, student organizations, leadership programs, or campus involvement initiatives. Experience working with college students in a higher education setting, including advising, mentoring, and student development.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Normal office or classroom or outside environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Particular project or program may require ability to drive a car for local or distant travel for consultation, training, meetings, or on site demonstrations. Must be able to bend, stoop, reach and lift for retrieving/maintaining files and for setting up multimedia equipment. Must be able to move between buildings, offices and classrooms. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
