Michigan Engineering Zone Instructor

The Michigan Engineering Zone serves as a pathway for Detroit-area pre-college students to discover STEM professions and prepare for their future. The Michigan Engineering Zone is seeking highly organized, energetic, enthusiastic, and team-oriented individuals to serve in a key seasonal role with emphasis on instructional design and implementation.

The Opportunity:

Directly reporting to MEZ program managers, instructors will play an integral role in delivering the curriculum that participants experience. Instructors will work with a team of camp staff to teach and evaluate rising 6th through 12th grade participants. The curriculum consists of project-based learning that is split into courses that include English, engineering concepts, computer programming, and mathematics and physics concepts.

The instructor must:

  • Have at least a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Have formal or informal teaching experience.
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Be prepared to teach in a way that is deeply responsive to students' needs.
  • Be flexible, willing to adapt to unique challenges, and accept tasks as they arise.
  • Be committed to the mission of the Michigan Engineering Zone.
  • (Preferred) Have a relevant teaching certificate.
  • (Preferred) Have experience teaching at middle/high school level.

The Work:

  • General Responsibilities
    • Develop/refine lesson plans, slide decks and other instructional material that align with the engineering kits selected for each program, as needed.
    • Work with other instructor(s) to develop/refine instructional material to integrate cross-curricular connections, as needed.
    • Work with the team to build out and manage the Canvas interface.
    • Demonstrate expertise using engineering kits selected for the Summer Programs.
    • Create a troubleshooting toolkit to assist participants with engineering kits.
    • Develop structures for building classroom culture.
    • Document what occurs during each instructional period.
    • Attend all assigned classes and program-related events.
  • Professional Development
    • Attend all scheduled pre-program instructor professional development training.
    • Work closely with the program advisors and share plans for lesson implementation.
  • Evaluation and Feedback
    • Plan and consult with the program managers to develop measures to assess student progress.
    • Develop grading/evaluation/accountability rubrics for participants in the program.
    • Administer course and student pre- and post-assessments.
    • Communicate any issues and concerns that potentially challenge successful teaching and learning in the programs to the Program Manager(s) as they arise.
  • Reporting
    • Report to the Program Manager(s) at scheduled meetings regarding:
      • Progress relative to accomplishing course objectives.
      • Individual student achievement.
      • Any concerns that are relative to the classroom or overall operation of that may affect academic components.
    • Develop a detailed End of Program summary report.
    • Save all lesson plans, slide decks and other instructional material created/updated for summer programs in the Curriculum drive and include links in the End of Program report.

Compensation: The compensation for this position is paid hourly at the rate of $25-$30 per hour for the hours of direct supervision of students and planning time. Compensation is based on education and experience.

Employment Timeline (exact dates depend on camp assignment):

June 1st - July 2nd Pre-planning and Asynchronous or In-Person Training (10 hours per week)

June 15th - August 1st In-person programs (15-20 hours per week)
