Job Summary

This is a professional social services management position of a supervisory and administrative nature, overseeing the Homeless Services Center in Portland. This position will also be responsible for operations of an additional shelter during times when the City opens winter warming space. The ideal candidate hired into this position will maintain a high level of positivity while leading a team of shelter attendants and supervisors to safely and efficiently operate a 24/7 shelter. The Homeless Services Center is a state of the art building on Riverside Street with the largest capacity in the State of Maine with a capacity of 258 beds.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Overall management of shelter including budget management.

  • Supervision of staff including shelter attendants, shelter security guards, senior supervisors and program coordinators.

  • Prepare statistical reports.

  • Conduct administrative meetings with consumers as needed.

  • Research and develop best practices for ending homelessness.

  • Lead a dynamic team striving to assist guests while they experience homelessness.

  • Active communication with area providers and neighbors other to ensure the shelter is a positive part of the neighborhood.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Graduation from a college or university with major course work in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field; previous experience providing direct services to homeless individuals or population; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Previous supervisory experience of a large volume of employees.

  • Experience in case management, crisis intervention, supervision, program development and administration.

  • Excellent communication skills including facilitation and presentation skills.

  • Willingness to work flexible work hours.

  • Considerable knowledge of community resources available in the area of social services and homelessness.

  • Ability to work independently, to achieve goals and objectives, and work collaboratively with other service providers in program planning and implementation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in project management and facilitating community discussions in a variety of settings preferred.

  • Knowledge of Federal funding policies preferred.

  • Previous experience as a homeless shelter manager desired.

Expected Hours/Schedule:

37.5 Hours weekly, Monday-Friday; 8:00 am- 4:30 pm

Salary & Benefits:

This is a non-union position, Grade C51, with a starting salary of $83,072 annually.
