About the Agency

The Mississippi State Treasury's Department of Unclaimed Property holds millions in cash and stocks that businesses, banks, insurance companies, and various financial institutions have, as required by law, sent to the state when their owners cannot be found. The Division of Unclaimed Property seeks to find owners of these unclaimed liquid assets and return the funds to rightful owners. The Department provides a publicly searchable database for individuals and organizations to view unclaimed properties and file claims to them either by mail or through an available electronic claims process accessed via the Mississippi State Treasury website. Treasury claims specialists process these claims and determine if the claim is eligible for payment. In addition to claims initiated by the public, claims specialists also proactively outreach to apparent owners of unclaimed properties in agency imitated claims. For more information, please email Theresa.abadie@treasury.ms.gov

About the Position

This position will require the individual employee to process submitted claims and to initiate claims as determined by the employee or by the employee's supervisor. In this position, duties are executed amidst a call center style environment. The employee will be available to answer calls from potential or existing claimants throughout the workday, and the employee will be expected to provide timely follow up for claims as required. This employee will also have a special focus on processing larger, more complex claims involving state agencies, estates, and other properties where multiple owners may be involved and where any payment of unclaimed funds must be distributed and sometimes divided in accordance with the Mississippi state law. This employee will also be required to regularly search the agency's non-public database in which claims specialists can access personal identifying information for the purpose of verifying claimant identities. This database includes protected information that cannot be accessed outside the agency, and which the employee is required by law to keep confidential and limited only to agency business. The employee will regularly work directly with claimants and their associates/relatives to determine eligibility and process claims. In this role, the employee will also be regularly processing weekly batches of checks, slated for unclaimed property recipients, including verifying payment accuracy, addresses, and all other data points required for successful disbursal of unclaimed funds.

What youll need to be Successful

A working knowledge of the Mississippi Uniformed Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act, Mississippi Section 89-12-1, Mississippi Code of 1972. This statute gives the Division of Unclaimed Property its authority to determine owners of unclaimed funds and repatriate such funds to rightful owners. The employee will need excellent customer/constituent service skills, able to communicate clearly with the general public in a professional, knowledgeable, precise and sometimes disarming tone. The employee will also need proficient writing skills as required to ensure all written correspondence with claimants and other professional colleagues is clear, concise, and free of grammatical errors. Working knowledge of basic office tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer is essential. The employee will be expected to work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and should also be prepared for some occasional in-state travel.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience. Hiring agency prefers: A bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, communication, or any discipline directly related to processing, determining eligibility, and approving and paying of unclaimed property claims in accordance with Mississippi State Law and/or related experience in banking, finance or in customer service roles will be considered desirable.
