Job Description

The Project Accountant serves as the financial backbone of the project team. You will work side-by-side with Project Managers and Executives to ensure financial integrity from pre-construction through closeout. This role requires a blend of technical accounting precision and communication skills to act as a bridge between the field and the finance office.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Portfolio Management: Oversee the full accounting lifecycle for a diverse portfolio of projects, typically totaling $50M–$150M+ in active contract value.
  • Requisition Management: Lead the monthly owner billing process, ensuring requisitions are accurate, timely, and compliant with contract terms.
  • Subcontractor Financials: Review and process subcontractor requisitions; verify insurance compliance, lien waivers, and adherence to billing procedures.
  • Budget Oversight: Maintain project budgets and process cost transfers/budget updates within the ERP system.
  • Cash Flow Analysis: Monitor project cash positions, select invoices for weekly disbursement cycles, and assist in cash flow forecasting.
  • Risk & Compliance: Support the administration of insurance programs and ensure all financial documentation meets audit and internal policy standards.
  • Project Collaboration: Participate in monthly project status meetings to validate percent-complete forecasts and identify potential financial risks.
  • Financial Closeout: Executed the end-to-end project closeout process, conducting final subcontractor account reconciliations, securing multi-tier lien waivers, and preparing final owner billings to facilitate the timely release of retention funds.
  • Cost Analysis: Perform variance analysis and contract reconciliations to ensure project profitability and health.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience: 2–5 years of project accounting experience, specifically within the construction or real estate industry.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in construction accounting and payment software (e.g., Timberline or similar ERPs, Procore Pay, Textura, GC Pay), and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Soft Skills: Ability to adapt to different management styles and communicate complex financial data to non-financial project staff.
  • Values: High integrity, attention to detail, and a proactive "problem-solver" mindset.
