Project Accountant

About the Opportunity
A growing, national services organization is seeking a General Accountant to join its Operational Finance team. This blended role combines traditional general ledger and month-end close responsibilities with project accounting, WIP reporting, job costing, and operational financial analysis.
The position offers broad exposure across corporate accounting and field operations and is designed for an accounting professional interested in developing toward a future Accounting/Finance Manager or Operations Controller role.
Key Responsibilities
Support the monthly close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
Prepare and analyze WIP schedules, job cost reports, project budgets, and actual-to-forecast results for assigned operating groups.
Partner with Finance and Operations leadership to review project performance, identify financial risks and opportunities, and improve visibility into profitability.
Support project setup, contract review, change orders, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and reporting accuracy.
Monitor inventory and construction activity to support accurate job costing and WIP reporting.
Assist with annual audit requirements, including preparation of balance sheet and income statement schedules.
Contribute to improvements in accounting systems, reporting tools, and processes across Corporate and Operational Finance.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
3–5+ years of accounting or finance experience, ideally including general ledger/month-end close and project or construction accounting.
Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and percentage-of-completion/project accounting required.
Construction, infrastructure, field services, or other project-based accounting experience strongly preferred.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with NetSuite or a comparable ERP preferred.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to partner effectively with operational leaders.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.
CPA and/or MBA preferred but not required.
Willingness to travel approximately 2–4 days per month.
