John F. Heltzel AIA, P.C. Architects is seeking a Project Architect / Architectural Associate with 6–10 years of U.S.-based commercial experience to join our team in Manassas, Virginia.
This role is intended for an architect who is comfortable leading small to mid-size projects independently, from early design through construction administration, and who enjoys working directly with clients, consultants, and contractors. After an initial acclimation period, the position follows a hybrid schedule (three days in-office, up to two remote).
This is not an entry-level or purely production role. Successful candidates will bring strong technical judgment, sound code knowledge, strong organizational skills, and the ability to move projects forward with minimal oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and lead projects in the VA-DC-MD region from schematic design through construction administration, applying knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and local code requirements.
- Contribute to schematic design and programming; independently translate client requirements into clear, buildable design solutions.
- Be resourceful and proactive in solving technical and design challenges.
- Collaborate closely with clients, consultants, and contractors.
- Prepare high-quality construction documents using Revit (or Revit LT).
- Ensure design solutions comply with applicable building codes.
- Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders to solve challenges.
- Attend site visits, surveys, and construction observations throughout Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland
Qualifications
- Professional degree in architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) from an accredited program.
- 6–10 years of professional U.S. architectural experience focused on small to mid-size commercial projects, including new construction, additions, renovations and tenant work.
- Proven ability to produce high-quality, coordinated documentation for permitting and construction.
- Strong design, technical, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to independently generate design solutions from client criteria is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in in Revit or Revit LT
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Architectural registration (or actively pursuing licensure) preferred.
- Valid Driver's License
