Overview

The Project Director - Mission Critical leads the planning, preconstruction, execution, commissioning, and closeout of complex mission critical construction projects, including data centers and other high-reliability facilities. This role provides strategic leadership to project teams, serves as a senior client-facing representative, and is accountable for safety, quality, schedule, cost, risk management, project controls, and operational readiness. The Project Director partners with owners, design teams, trade partners, vendors, equipment manufacturers, and internal leadership to deliver technically complex projects on time, within budget, and to the highest performance standards.

Responsibilities

  • The Project Director - Mission Critical oversees and is accountable for:

  • Maintaining strong client relationships and serving as a senior point of contact throughout pursuit, preconstruction, construction, commissioning, and closeout

  • Supporting business development activities, client strategy, market positioning, proposals, interviews, and negotiated project opportunities

  • Leading project setup, governance structure, delivery strategy, communication protocols, reporting cadence, and project execution planning

  • Overseeing preconstruction services, constructability reviews, design coordination, value analysis, estimating, budgeting, and schedule development

  • Developing and monitoring project budgets, forecasts, cash flow, cost controls, billings, change management, and overall financial performance

  • Managing master schedules, milestone tracking, critical path activities, manpower planning, logistics, and recovery plans when needed

  • Leading procurement and subcontracting strategies for critical equipment, long-lead materials, specialty vendors, and key trade partners

  • Coordinating with design teams, consultants, subcontractors, vendors, owners, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical and operational issues

  • Ensuring strict adherence to safety standards, quality expectations, contract requirements, ethics, compliance, and regulatory obligations

  • Establishing and monitoring QA/QC processes, inspection protocols, documentation requirements, punch processes, and corrective action plans

  • Overseeing commissioning planning, readiness reviews, systems turnover, issue resolution, and closeout activities for critical building systems

  • Monitoring project documentation, meeting minutes, submittals, RFIs, change orders, contracts, invoices, and owner reporting for accuracy and timeliness

  • Leading owner, architect, contractor, preconstruction, progress, discipline, commissioning, and executive-level project meetings

  • Identifying, assessing, communicating, and mitigating risks that may impact project performance, customer satisfaction, or operational readiness

  • Leading project management, field, safety, quality, procurement, and project controls teams assigned to mission critical work

  • Assigning work, setting expectations, monitoring performance, and holding team members accountable for project outcomes

  • Coaching, mentoring, training, and developing Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, and other project team members

  • Creating a collaborative, accountable, solutions-oriented team culture that supports complex, fast-paced project delivery

  • Providing ongoing feedback, development conversations, recognition, and performance input for assigned team members

  • Supporting interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and workforce planning for mission critical project teams

  • May serve as a mentor to new hires or team members transitioning into mission critical project delivery

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, architecture, business, or related field preferred
  • 15+ years of construction experience, including significant experience leading large-scale commercial, industrial, data center, or mission critical projects
  • Experience leading complex projects or programs with major capital budgets, accelerated schedules, technical systems, and multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated understanding of mission critical construction, including MEP coordination, power, cooling, low-voltage, structured cabling, commissioning, redundancy, and operational readiness considerations
  • Strong knowledge of construction principles, preconstruction, estimating, scheduling, procurement, project controls, contract management, cost forecasting, and change management
  • Proven ability to lead client relationships, negotiate effectively, influence decisions, and resolve complex issues in high-pressure environments
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, communication, business development, and team-building skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, scheduling software, project management systems, cost management tools, and related construction technology platforms preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in office, field office, and active construction site environments, with regular exposure to mission critical project sites and related safety requirements.
  • Position may require frequent travel to project sites, client meetings, vendor locations, and pursuit or industry events.
  • Environment is demanding and fast paced; work hours may exceed 40 hours per week and may require availability outside standard business hours to support project needs.
  • Light physical effort is required, including walking job sites, standing, sitting, talking, hearing, and occasionally handling objects; construction site access may require use of personal protective equipment.
  • Position requires a high level of autonomy and decision-making that may impact project performance, client satisfaction, and company results.
