Project Engineer

Work Locations: Tri-State Area: New York, NY, Connecticut, CT, and New Jersey, NJ OR Houston, TX areas

Compensation: $165K - $180k + bonus

Travel: Up to 30%, particularly during outage season

Company Information:

Alpha Generation is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support capital and maintenance projects across a 24-plant, 12-GW power generation fleet in the northeastern United States. The role provides technical and project management leadership for planned and emergent work, including direct management of select projects and support of fleet-wide project execution in collaboration with plant operations, maintenance, and engineering teams. This role may support mechanical, civil, electrical, or controls-focused projects depending on the candidate’s background and business needs.

Detailed Job Requirements/Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote and champion safety by ensuring work activities and equipment conditions comply with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support project execution in alignment with company objectives for safety, quality, budget, schedule, and operational reliability.
  • Support day-to-day operational and project activities across the fleet, with a focus on planned maintenance outages and forced outages.
  • Provide technical support during scheduled and forced outages, including oversight of inspections, repairs, testing, and commissioning.
  • Make responsible technical decisions regarding equipment condition, including evaluation of non-conforming components and associated risks.
  • Assist in planning and executing projects during outages, including defining scope, schedules, budgets, milestones, and resource requirements.
  • Support capital upgrade projects, including renewable initiatives, in alignment with long-term asset strategy.
  • Monitor, document, and report project performance, including cost, schedule, risks, and issues.
  • Develop, review, and maintain engineering deliverables, specifications, drawings, and field as-built documentation.
  • Prepare project analyses, cost estimates, budgets, schedules, and execution plans to support approvals and decision-making.
  • Support procurement activities, including RFP development, bid evaluations, technical recommendations, and contract administration.
  • Manage contractor performance and ensure quality, safety, and compliance with approved scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Maintain familiarity with applicable safety, environmental, and construction codes and support permitting activities as required.

Experience & Qualifications Requirements

  • This ideal candidate will have at least the following:
  • Accredited B.S. in an Engineering discipline (Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering preferred).
  • Project management credentials (e.g., PMP/AACE CCP/PSP) preferred; PE license a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience directly involved with capital planning, engineering, design, contracting, project management, construction management, maintenance support, budgeting, and procurement.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Working knowledge of power plant systems, including turbines, generators, transformers, rotating equipment, electrical auxiliaries, and control systems.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical one-line diagrams, control schematics, and protection logic.
  • Knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controls (PLC).
  • Familiarity with industry-relevant codes and standards such as ASME, IEEE, and NFPA, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with enterprise asset management (EAM) systems, SharePoint, or Power BI is a plus.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Work Environment

  • Power plant environment with exposure to outdoor conditions, elevated work areas, high noise levels, rotating equipment, and high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Work may involve extreme temperatures, high humidity, confined spaces, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators.
  • Requires working at heights of up to 100 feet, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license required; position includes regional travel to fleet locations and occasional travel for training conferences or meetings.
  • Position may require availability for 24/7 operational or emergency response, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
