Project Engineer


The Project Engineer is responsible for managing capital projects for the Insulation Group with budgets up to $2–3 million. This role requires strong technical expertise to develop project scopes, as well as robust project management skills to effectively control cost, schedule, and performance.


The Project Engineer ensures projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget by leading cross-functional teams that may include internal stakeholders, central engineering, product development, external consultants, and contractors. Given the scale and long-term impact of these investments, this role plays a critical role in supporting overall operational and financial performance.


In addition, this position provides engineering support for plant operations, smaller capital projects, and the integration of new technologies.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities


Mechanical Engineering Support (40%)


+ Provide design, research, and analysis to support all mechanical engineering requirements within the manufacturing plant.


Project Management (25%)


+ Lead capital and modification projects, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, and budget requirements.


Plant Support (25%)


+ Support plant operations and maintenance by managing smaller expense and improvement projects.


Procurement & Budgeting (5%)


+ Conduct bid meetings, prepare appropriation requests, and support capital planning efforts.


Safety Programs (5%)


+ Participate actively in plant safety initiatives, including monthly audits and maintenance-related safety improvements.


Additional Responsibilities


+ Manage capital and major maintenance projects with direct impact on plant and group budgets.

+ Develop and execute projects from concept through implementation, including:

+ Scope development

+ Cost estimation

+ Process hazard analysis

+ Scheduling and resource planning

+ Equipment commissioning and startup

+ Post-project documentation and reporting

+ Ensure projects are delivered within defined scope, timeline, and budget constraints.

+ Lead cross-functional teams and coordinate engineering activities across departments and sites.

+ Manage contractors, consultants, and internal resources, including performance evaluations and work assignments.

+ Drive plant troubleshooting initiatives and cost reduction efforts.

+ Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing based on business needs.

+ Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental standards.

+ Handle administrative functions such as purchase requisitions, invoice approvals, and budget tracking.

+ Maintain communication and alignment with engineering teams across U.S. facilities.

+ Manage and supervise other engineers and multiple plant/capital improvement projects.

+ Enter purchase requisitions, approve invoices, and track spending.

+ Be accountable for project completion on time, within budget, and completed safely with all necessary documentation.


+ Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

+ Excellent planning, organization, leadership, presentation, decision-making, analytical, and oral/written communication skills required.

+ 3–5 years of manufacturing experience strongly preferred.

+ Strong knowledge of the gypsum processing industry is a plus.

+ Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint using the Windows platform is required.

+ AutoCAD experience required.

+ JD Edwards ERP experience is a plus.

+ Project Management Certification is a plus
