Project Engineer
Position Overview
The Project Engineer supports the successful delivery of construction projects by managing technical information and document flow between the project team, consultants, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel.
The Project Engineer ensures that drawings, submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, inspections, and other project information are accurate, current, properly coordinated, and available to the field when needed.

Location: Office-based with regular site presence for coordination and inspections
Key Responsibilities
Submittals & RFIs
Maintain and manage the project submittal register from initiation through approval and closeout.
Review, log, route, track, and close submittals in accordance with project requirements and schedule.
Establish required-on-site dates based on the construction schedule and procurement lead times.
Draft RFIs based on field questions and include proposed solutions when appropriate.
Route RFIs to the appropriate design professionals and track responses through closure.
Review shop drawings and submittals against contract documents before forwarding for approval.
Identify discrepancies, conflicts, and missing information before they impact the field.
Project Coordination & Document Control
Perform architectural, structural, and MEP coordination reviews to identify potential conflicts before installation.
Maintain the project drawing set of record, including current revisions, bulletins, addenda, and ASIs.
Distribute updated drawings and project information to the field promptly.
Verify that field personnel are working from the current construction documents.
Remove or clearly identify superseded drawings and documents.
Coordinate technical information between the project team, consultants, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel.
Quantities & Technical Support
Perform quantity takeoffs for scope changes, budget reviews, and change-order verification.
Assist the Project Manager with technical research and document review.
Support the review and verification of subcontractor and vendor change-order requests.
Coordinate special and deputy inspections as required.
Maintain accurate inspection logs and related project documentation.
Project Closeout
Maintain closeout documentation throughout the project rather than waiting until project completion.
Coordinate and assemble as-built drawings, O&M manuals, warranties, certificates, inspection records, and other required closeout documents.
Track outstanding closeout requirements and communicate deficiencies to the appropriate team members.
Support the Project Manager in achieving a complete and organized project closeout.
Authority & Responsibilities
The Project Engineer is responsible for the accuracy, organization, and timely flow of project information.
This position does not have authority over project cost, contractual scope, schedule commitments, or subcontractor direction. Conflicts, potential cost impacts, scope issues, and matters requiring management direction must be escalated promptly to the Project Manager.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of experience as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, or equivalent role in building construction.
Ability to read, understand, and interpret complete construction document sets.
Working proficiency with Bluebeam or comparable construction document markup software.
Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
Ability to prepare clear, professional RFIs, submittal comments, and project correspondence.
Highly organized and able to manage project information through established systems and processes.
Demonstrated ability to independently track documents, deadlines, responses, and outstanding items.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree or formal education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
Familiarity with California Title 24 and CAL Green requirements.
Experience coordinating special and deputy inspections in Los Angeles.
Experience with multifamily, residential, or ADU construction.
Experience with construction management and document-control platforms.

A submittal register they have personally maintained.
An RFI they have personally prepared.
Their process for tracking outstanding project information.
How they verify that the field is working from current construction documents.
How they identify and escalate technical conflicts or potential project impacts.
Performance Expectations
Performance will be evaluated based on:
Timely review and routing of submittals.
Active tracking and escalation of aging RFIs.
No avoidable field delays caused by missing, outdated, or late project information.
Current drawing sets maintained and available at project sites.
Accurate and timely distribution of project documents.
Properly maintained inspection and technical documentation.
Progressive completion of closeout documentation.
Consistent communication and coordination with the project team and field.
First 30-90 Days
Within the first 90 days, the Project Engineer is expected to establish effective ownership of project information and document control for assigned projects. This includes bringing submittal and RFI logs current, becoming fully familiar with project drawings, specifications, schedules, consultants, and project procedures, and implementing reliable systems for tracking outstanding information.
The Project Engineer should ensure required-on-site dates are coordinated with the construction schedule and applicable lead times, maintain accurate current drawing sets, support consultant and subcontractor coordination, and demonstrate effective management of RFIs, submittals, inspections, and technical documentation.
By the end of the first 90 days, the Project Engineer should be functioning as a dependable technical resource for the project team and field, with a consistent system for preventing information gaps, identifying potential conflicts early, and ensuring the field has the correct information when needed.
