The Project Engineer manages technology and integration projects, ensuring successful delivery of solutions that meet defined project goals. This role works closely with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners, and requires a strong understanding of design approaches and industry technologies used in fulfillment and distribution center environments. The position offers broad exposure to internal teams and vendors, significant project management experience across multiple disciplines, and the opportunity to build a substantial internal network within a large, customer-centric organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage technology and integration projects from concept through installation and commissioning, ensuring solutions meet project scope, schedule, and quality goals.
  • Coordinate with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners to define requirements, align expectations, and drive successful project outcomes.
  • Oversee engineering equipment installation and commissioning activities, including material-handling equipment and other automation systems in fulfillment and distribution centers.
  • Develop and review integrated automation layouts using CAD software, ensuring designs align with operational requirements and industry best practices.
  • Manage project budgets for automation initiatives, ranging from approximately 0.5 million to 50 million, maintaining cost control and financial accountability.
  • Provide technical leadership on large-scale industrial engineering projects, guiding cross-functional teams and resolving complex engineering challenges.
  • Plan and coordinate construction, facilities, and installation activities to minimize operational disruption and ensure safe, efficient implementation.
  • Collaborate with internal vendors and cross-functional stakeholders to support project coordination, resource planning, and issue resolution.
  • Use project management methodologies and tools to track progress, manage risks, and communicate status to stakeholders.
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation, including schedules, layout drawings, technical specifications, and progress reports.
  • Support throughput qualification and performance validation of integrated automation solutions, such as material handling systems and high-speed packaging or manufacturing lines.
  • Travel regularly to installation sites across North America to oversee on-site execution, troubleshoot issues, and ensure projects are delivered to specification.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Operations, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience as a project engineer, process engineer, project manager, manufacturing engineer, or in a closely related occupation.
  • Experience directly managing and being responsible for cumulative automation project budgets in the range of approximately 0.5 million to 50 million.
  • Proven technical leadership experience on large-scale industrial engineering projects.
  • Demonstrated design and/or implementation experience with integrated automation solutions, including complex material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, and manufacturing lines.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, scheduling, risk management, and stakeholder communication.
  • Experience with vendor management in engineering, construction, or equipment installation environments.
  • Hands-on experience with engineering equipment installation and commissioning in facilities or distribution center settings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Project, and Outlook.
  • Highly proficient CAD skills, with the ability to independently develop integrated automation layouts.
  • Ability to travel up to 75% of the time to installation sites throughout North America.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with throughput qualification (TQ) or similar performance validation methodologies.
  • Background in facilities engineering, construction coordination, or material-handling equipment projects.
  • Experience working in fulfillment, distribution center, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on process improvement and operational efficiency.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams, vendors, and customers.
  • Ability to build and maintain a broad internal network and work across multiple disciplines.
  • Interest in developing long-term project management and industrial engineering expertise within a large, customer-centric organization.

Work Environment

This role operates within a dynamic engineering and project delivery environment focused on fulfillment and distribution center automation. The position requires frequent travel, with the ability to be on the road up to 75% of the time across the United States and North America. Typical travel patterns involve flying to an installation site on Monday morning, remaining on-site throughout the week, and returning home on Friday afternoon, with occasional extended stays over weekends based on personal preference and project needs. Work is primarily conducted at installation sites, where you will interact with construction teams, facilities staff, equipment vendors, and internal stakeholders. You will regularly use CAD software, Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Project, Outlook), and other project management and engineering technologies. The environment emphasizes collaboration, technical excellence, and customer-centric solutions, and offers strong opportunities to build internal relationships, gain exposure to multiple teams and vendors, and be recommended for future projects or permanent roles.
