Project Geologist / Geotechnical Engineer – PG/PE

Position Overview:

UES is seeking an experienced Project Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer to support a specialized project in Portsmouth, Ohio. This position will serve as an on-site technical professional during geotechnical exploration activities, providing field oversight, subsurface characterization, technical logging, and detailed project documentation.

 

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience supporting geotechnical drilling and subsurface investigations, with the technical knowledge to accurately evaluate and document soil and rock conditions encountered in the field.

 

An active Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is required for this project.

Responsibilities:

 

What You’ll Do

• Serve as an on-site technical representative during geotechnical drilling and subsurface exploration activities.
• Observe drilling operations and provide technical oversight of field investigation activities.
• Perform detailed soil, rock, and core logging and classification in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
• Document subsurface stratigraphy, material characteristics, sampling intervals, recovery, drilling conditions, and other relevant field observations.
• Observe and document groundwater conditions encountered during drilling and exploration.
• Monitor sampling activities and coordinate with drilling crews regarding sample collection, boring advancement, core recovery, and investigation depths.
• Prepare and maintain accurate boring logs, field notes, photographs, sampling records, and other technical documentation.
• Identify changes or unexpected subsurface conditions and communicate findings promptly to project engineers, geologists, and project management.
• Review field data and documentation for technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency with project requirements.
• Coordinate effectively with drill crews, contractors, project managers, engineers, geologists, and other project personnel.
• Support additional geotechnical field investigation activities as required.
• Perform work in accordance with UES and project-specific safety, quality, and technical requirements.

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
• Active Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Professional experience in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, or subsurface investigations.
• Demonstrated field experience supporting drilling and geotechnical exploration programs.
• Experience with soil and/or rock/core logging and classification.
• Working knowledge of subsurface sampling methods and geotechnical investigation practices.
• Ability to recognize and accurately document soil, rock, stratigraphic, and groundwater conditions.
• Experience preparing technical field documentation, including boring logs and investigation records.
• Strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a field environment while coordinating effectively with a larger project team.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.
• Ability and willingness to travel to and work at the Portsmouth, Ohio project site according to the project's required schedule.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, or Environmental Science; Master’s degree preferred.
• 8+ years of progressive experience in environmental site investigation, remediation, or regulatory compliance
• FG certification required; Professional Geologist (PG) license strongly preferred or required based on state
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current refresher
• valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Expertise in environmental regulations, risk-based remediation strategies, and project lifecycle management.
• Advanced proficiency in field instrumentation, data interpretation, geologic modeling, and QA/QC processes
• Proven experience leading technical teams, mentoring junior staff, and managing client relationships
• Strong track record of writing, reviewing, and signing off on regulatory submittals, proposals, and reports.
• Strategic thinking, project scoping, and budgeting experience preferred.

• 4+ years of progressive experience in environmental site investigation, remediation, or regulatory compliance
• Rock coring and core logging
• Soil classification and logging
• Standard Penetration Testing (SPT)
• Drilling oversight
• Groundwater observations and monitoring
• Geotechnical instrumentation
• Large-scale subsurface investigation programs
• Infrastructure, environmental, industrial, or federal projects
• Field coordination with drilling contractors

Travel Requirements:

This position requires moderate travel, approximately up to 40% of the time, in support of business
objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on
project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may
be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and
use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

• This position primarily works in an outdoor work environment, regularly exposed to varying field conditions, including:
  • Sites that may not be accessible by vehicle, requiring travel on foot through wetlands, swamps, grasslands, fields, and other uneven or rugged terrain with natural and man-made obstacles such as sand, brush, and debris.
  • Moderate to loud noise levels, common in active construction and industrial environments.
  • Exposure to environmental elements including dirt, dust, sun, heat, humidity, and adverse weather conditions.
• The physical requirements for this position may include and are not limited to:
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 35 to 75 lbs. up to 75 feet, involving regular repetitive motion.
  • Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate equipment for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands and arms for typing, handling tools, and operating equipment.
  • Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, climb, balance, lift, carry, and push as required for fieldwork and inspections.
  • Ability to speak and hear effectively to communicate in noisy environments and with project teams.
  • Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant, and peripheral vison, depth vision, and ability to focus) smell, hear, touch (use hands to reach climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)
