Summary: The Project Inspector applies professional principles, practices, and techniques to perform inspection duties for St. Tammany Parish projects.

  • Observe and document the work of projects, ensuring proper materials are used and that the work is done in accordance with the Plans and Specifications, development standards, safety measures and adherence to LADOTD Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges
  • Notify the contractor and/or supervisor of any deficiencies or noncompliance, including any potential change orders, delays in schedule, and compliance with codes, ordinances, plans, specs etc.
  • Complete daily work plans, reports and any other documentation describing the construction activities for all projects to which assigned
  • Investigates, evaluates and makes recommendation for improvements relative to road and drainage problems and/or construction activities
  • Supervision of construction, cooperation and review of testing laboratory activities and other related activities
  • Conduct sampling and quality assurance testing of construction and maintenance materials such as soils, aggregate, asphalt binders, geo-textiles, cement, metals, soil additives, etc.
  • Conduct periodic plan and spec checks through surveying techniques to verify elevations and quantities
  • Administers change orders under the supervision of the Project Manager/Construction Manager
  • Regular, consistent attendance is required
  • Any other duties as assigned

Competencies: Employee must be able to operate basic office equipment, office computer and software, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, scanner, and other specialty equipment needed for the position, including basic drafting tools, surveyor's level and rod, coring rig, measuring wheel, straight edge and a smart level. Employee must communicate effectively and have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Work Environment: The incumbent typically performs in an outdoor environment. This includes construction sites, open and empty land, wooded areas, both urban and rural roads and drainage, muddy areas, swampy areas, hot, humid, cold, and wet conditions that are consistent with outdoor projects. The incumbent may also be exposed to wildlife and bugs in the environment. This position may include work performed in an office environment for training, plan reviews, meetings, and project preparation and progress reviews.

Physical Demands: Light work. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors such as loss of fine dexterity or inability to sit for long periods of time.

Required Education/Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent GED and minimum four years' experience working as an inspector on civil road, drainage, bridge projects or related experience required. Qualified candidates must have or obtain within one year all Asphaltic/Concrete Paving LA DOTD certifications needed for the position. Additional LA DOTD certificates obtained are required after asphalt certification will be considered for additional compensation. The additional LA DOTD certifications, Embankment & Base Course and Portland Concrete (PCC) Pacing, although not required are encouraged. The candidate must possess a valid Driver's License.
