ROLE
WHC LLC (A Surerus Murphy Company) (WHC), is seeking to recruit a Project Lead Safety Coordinator. The Project Lead Safety Coordinator is responsible for supporting the implementation and execution of the company Safety Management System on assigned projects. This position serves as the lead field safety representative and provides guidance, mentorship, and direction to Safety Coordinators while partnering with project leadership to achieve safety, operational, and client objectives.

The Project Lead Safety Coordinator works closely with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, and client representatives to ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations. This position focuses on incident prevention, hazard identification, regulatory compliance, safety leadership, and continuous improvement throughout all phases of construction activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead and coordinate daily activities of assigned Safety Coordinators.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and training to project safety personnel.
  • Partner with Project Management and Operations teams to support safe and efficient project execution.
  • Conduct routine field audits, inspections, observations, and compliance assessments.
  • Identify safety concerns, develop corrective actions, and monitor completion.
  • Participate in project planning, pre-task planning, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and risk assessments.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, property damage events, and safety observations, ensuring timely reporting and corrective actions.
  • Track and analyse safety performance indicators and communicate trends to project leadership.
  • Lead and facilitate safety meetings, orientations, toolbox talks, and safety stand-downs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of project-specific safety plans, emergency response plans, and client-required programs.
  • Serve as the primary field contact for client safety representatives and regulatory agencies when required.
  • Support company audits, client audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through employee engagement, coaching, and visible field leadership.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to training, qualifications, inspections, audits, incident investigations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist the Safety Manager in implementing corporate safety initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
  • Intervene and stop work when unsafe conditions or behaviours create unacceptable risk.

Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or related field is considered an asset.
  • CHST certification preferred or ability to obtain.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 – 7 years of construction safety experience.
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years of pipeline construction experience preferred.
  • Previous experience leading or mentoring Safety Coordinators, Foremen, and/or field personnel.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and developing corrective action plans.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry best practices.
  • Understanding of pipeline construction activities including clearing, grading, excavation, trenching, lowering-in, hydrostatic testing, tie-ins, HDD operations, and commissioning activities.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and site inspections.
  • Knowledge of incident investigation methodologies and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information to large groups and project leadership teams.
  • Strong conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence safe behaviours through positive engagement and leadership.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is field based and often works within remote project locations. Travel and/or living in temporary accommodation is required.  Able to work 6 days on, 1 day off shift with 10-hour shifts for the duration of project. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Project Lead Safety Coordinator reports to the HSE Manager.
