Job Title: Project Manager / Estimator - Commercial Electrical
Job Description
This role supports the Commercial Department and may also assist the Commercial Service Department as needed. The Project Manager / Estimator prepares competitive and accurate estimates for commercial electrical projects and manages awarded projects from start to closeout. The position focuses on delivering safe, on-schedule, and on-budget projects while building strong relationships with clients, vendors, and field teams. The ideal candidate brings solid commercial electrical estimating experience, strong organizational and customer-focused skills, and a proactive mindset with a good understanding of the Kansas City commercial electrical market.
Responsibilities
- Prepare competitive, detailed, and accurate estimates for commercial electrical projects.
- Review plans, specifications, and bid documents to develop complete and compliant bids.
- Identify project risks, cost-saving options, and value engineering opportunities.
- Develop and maintain lasting relationships with general contractors, owners, and business partners to support ongoing and repeat business.
- Help generate repeat business by providing exceptional service, responsiveness, and reliable communication.
- Manage commercial electrical projects from award through closeout, ensuring scope, schedule, and budget alignment.
- Coordinate manpower, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and schedules to keep projects on track.
- Monitor project budgets, labor productivity, purchasing, and overall project profitability.
- Manage change orders, RFIs, submittals, and all related project documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
- Identify potential issues early and resolve them before they affect the schedule, cost, or customer satisfaction.
- Work closely with field supervisors and electricians to ensure successful field execution of the work.
- Support field crews by providing clear direction, timely information, and the resources needed to perform safely and efficiently.
- Partner with purchasing, warehouse, accounting, and leadership teams to keep projects moving efficiently through all phases.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement across project teams.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customers and stakeholders throughout the life of each project.
- Communicate proactively with customers, contractors, and project stakeholders regarding progress, issues, and solutions.
- Provide practical, solutions-focused responses to project challenges and avoid surprises for clients.
- Deliver projects that meet or exceed expectations, supporting repeat business and long-term relationships.
Essential Skills
- Experience estimating and/or managing commercial electrical construction projects.
- Strong understanding of commercial electrical systems, construction methods, and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
- Ability to confidently read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
- Proficiency in electrical estimation, including bidding and cost analysis for commercial projects.
- Knowledge of electrical construction practices, including low voltage systems.
- Ability to apply electrical code requirements effectively in design and construction planning.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for working with customers, project teams, and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Financial awareness, including understanding budgets, costs, and project profitability.
- Proficiency with estimating software and project management software tools.
- Blueprint reading skills and familiarity with electrical construction documentation.
- Journeyman electrician license or equivalent experience in the electrical trade.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Master Electrician license is preferred.
- Commercial electrical estimating experience beyond basic exposure is highly desirable.
- Previous project management or service coordination experience in commercial electrical work.
- Experience working with general contractors and commercial construction teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong client and partner relationships.
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering high-quality service.

Work Environment
The role operates within a commercial electrical construction environment that combines office-based estimating and project management with frequent coordination with field teams and job sites. You will regularly review blueprints, plans, and specifications, and use estimating and project management software to plan and track work. The position involves close collaboration with field supervisors, electricians, purchasing, warehouse, accounting, and leadership to ensure materials, equipment, and manpower are in place to support project schedules. Work typically follows standard business hours, with flexibility required at times to meet bid deadlines or address project issues. The environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement, with a strong focus on clear communication and building long-term customer relationships.
